Thomas's Story

Life Lived fast but decided not to die young. Graduated school, got married at an early age (21) but divorced at 28. Best thing that came out of it was my beautiful daughter. When the divorce was finalized I ended up with full custody of my daughter (who was 4 yrs old) which was unheard of at that time so that tells you what the marriage was like. Ended up raising her on my own which wasn't easy but it was well worth it (okay, okay, I did have help from my parents')and now she is an adult in her early 30's, married and I have two (2) beautiful grandchildren. My granddaughter is 16 yrs old and my grandson (also known as my little clone because if you put my picture at that age next to his you would swear that it is the same person)is 13 yrs old. I don't get to see them as often as I would like as they live about 70 miles away but they enjoy spending time with not only me (is that why I keep getting asked to babysit them either here or at their home) but also their great-grandmother, unfortunately my father passed away 2 yrs ago. I have stayed single all of this time but I have come close to getting married a couple of times. However, for some reason each time there was like a little voice telling me that it wasn't right and that voice always turned out to be right. Until that right one does come along I am perfectly happy to be dating the various ones that I am seeing right now. The best part is that I don't lie to them and they all know that I see others and they accept it. And of course there are also the women that are just good friends that I get together with now and then and we go out and have a good time together. One thing that I do have to laugh at, up until 12 years ago I had a mustache (since graduating high school) and then I just decided to shave it off. Since then I have been approached by many different women of all different ages (some even in their 20's)and have been asked out on dates. If I had known that, I would have shaved the damn thing off a lot earlier. I have been very lucky to have made many friends that live in different states (and Canada) and we always keep in touch and on occassion even travel to visit with each other. Through other sites (such as photo sharing ones) I have made friends all over the world and we keep in touch with each other all of the time. Workplace I spent a large portion of my career in the corporate world working my way up thru various management positions. In 1984 started working in the field of community and social services based at the local Youth Center I grew up at, "Near Northwest Civic Committee" and worked closely with the local schools, including where I graduated from, "James Otis". I was involved in not only working with the families and children of the community but also in various community development programs with the city and other community groups. In 1989 I was appointed by the Mayor to his "Gang Crimes Control Panel" and spent 5 yrs on it. During this time I was also asked to go around the State speaking to different groups; as well as appearing on various media pro...Expand for more
grams to talk about working with underprivilged children and gang prevention programs. In 1995 I went back to the corporate world and worked as the Chief of Operations for a company that did business with many of the top restaurants and hotels in Chicago. Stayed there until the company was sold in early 1998. Since 1998 I have been working for the Cook County Circuit Court in the Domestic Relations (Family Law Bureau) Division. Our division is responsible for Divorce cases and Independent Orders of Protection. Worked as a Courtroom Clerk and since June of 2003 I have been a Supervisor there. Spent 5 yrs.as "Courtroom Clerk Trainer" responsible for the training of new courtroom clerks as well as followup training of those in need of it. My job at times requires me to travel to any of the 5 other District Courthouses located in the suburbs. I have also been called upon by many Judges for my expertise in various areas and to handle their call when it is an extremely heavy one, or to be there for trials that may be going into the late evening hours. Since August of 2007 I have been assigned to the new Domestic Violence courthouse working in one of the 2 courtrooms that handle Civil Orders of Protection (approx. 60 cases per day in each room). I work with a great team composed of myself and 3 other court clerks for these two rooms and we have known each other for years (1 of whom I trained). You see a lot here, but unfortunately you also see those who try to use the system to get back at someone and are not telling the truth when they come here. It makes it bad for those who really do need help, and believe it or not, it is not just women who are being abused either physically or emotionally. I guess you can say that I have always enjoyed working with people and I can honestly say that I have gained the respect, trust and friendship of the many Judges and Lawyers that I have worked with. The funny part is that some of the female lawyers that I deal with are always trying to play matchmaker between me and their female clients once their divorce is finalized. I just tell them to remember, I know all of the dirty little details about their clients and what led to the divorce in the first place. Besides, if you start to date litigants it can lead to some problems with work and I don't need that headache. On some ocassions I have been personally asked out by some litigants once their divorce is finalized. Even crazier are the ones that are abuse victims that tell me all about the threats that their man has made if they catch them with another man and what he would do to both of them and then turn around and ask if I would like to go out sometime. Excuse me, but the last time I looked in the mirror I did not have STUPID!! written on my forehead. Due to being caregiver for my 84 yr old Mother who has been in and out of the hospital over the past few years I decided to take early retirement from the Court Clerk's office in February of this year (2014). Family is more important than anything else. Military I would tell you but then I would have to kill you
