Thomas's Story

Life I lived in Bay Ridge all the way from infancy to my mid 30's. My Mother was from there but my Father came from North Carolina. They met while he was posted at Fort Hamilton army base. That is why my Sister and I were born here rather than in the South as many of our forbears were. I had a pretty average Bay Ridge childhood. It was when we traveled in the summers to my southern relatives that things got interesting. It must have had an effect because I was the only six year old I knew who could sing the confederate anthem Bonny Blue Flag and I never developed a Brooklyn accent. I liked Bay Ridge pretty much but when I got older I spent most of my time in Manhattan. I spent so much work and play time there that most of my friends considered me to be the quintessential New Yorker. Even though I don't live there I go back anytime I can and I still get around on the subway so well that tourists often ask me for directions little knowing that that I'm one of them. I attended CUNY and got a Bachelor's and Master's degrees and went into the field of Librarianship as I always wanted. I generally worked in a clerical and later information manager capacity in Banks, Brokerage houses and Law firms. I also found the time to be a hotwalker at Aqueduct and Belmont race courses. I now work as a Librarian in the Broward County Florida system in Fort Lauderdale where I live. School The person who inspited me the most was not a teacher but extremely important to all of us. She was Mrs Mc Clenahan the school Librarian. I worked for her for 2 years and she was a very positive mentor to me because she knew I planned to enter the profession. I'll always treasure the times I spent in the library working for her. ...Expand for more
College I attended the College of Staten Island while wotking full and sometimes part time. Most of the jobs I had were clerical which branched out into research and providing information to members of law firms or brokerage houses. I returned to school and attended Queens College to earn a Master's degree in Library Science. I have used this degree in the fields of law, finance, medicine and public library service. Workplace After high school I worked as a mail room employee for Smith Barney in the financial district in Manhattan. After that I was a clerk for the Brooklyn Public Library. I worked after that for banks, brokerage houses and actuarial firms from 1969 to 1983. I returned to school to earn a Master's degree. I worked as a Librarian for the Brooklyn Public system and after that I also worked at a law firm as a business reference librarian. During that period in the mid 80's to mid 90's I assisted my Sister on weekends and vacations to run a family thoroughbred racing stable in New Jersey. Sycamore farms raced in the states of Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In 1997 I became the Assistant Medical Services librarian at Jersey Shore Medical Center. I moved to Florida in 1998 and currently am a Librarian III at the main branch of the Broward County Library where I am responsible for the supervision of the Reference & Information services section. Some of our highlights are in the areas of International Languages, Genealogy, Biography, Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health. I am currently the project manager for a grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer foundation. In that capacity I manage a team that oversees collection development, public outreach and marketing.
