Thérèse's Story
High school seems like a lifetime ago! After graduating in 1976 I attended UBC and obtained a BA in French. I did supplemental summer studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, France before completing my degree. I entered law school at UBC in 1980. Throughout this time I worked at Woodwards in New Westminster in the produce department. Woodwards was kind to its students: it paid well and always gave us time off for exams.
I was called to the bar in 1984 and after working for a small suburban firm I joined up with some colleagues and began to practice in Burnaby, not far from Lougheed Mall. The firm became known as Stone and Alexander and we had a thriving practice. In December, 1995 I accepted an appointment to the Provincial Court of BC. Throughout all this I married Ravi Hira and we have two sons who are now both in university. The eldest has just finished first year law and the younger has yet to decide his career path. I think our old French teacher Mrs. Osborne would be happy- I have kept up my French and I preside in both official languages throughout the province when required.
My judicial career has been long and rewarding- I was on the executive of the Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges and in 2007-8 I served as national president. I have been involved in many other law -related organizations and remain actively involved in judicial education. I have retained my interest in classical ballet and I dance regularly. When time permits, my husband and I like to travel and we have been fortunate enough to visit many wonderful locations throughout the world.
I am looking forward to a 2016 reunion!
