Tim's Story

Life Since High School I have spent 13 years in the Military as a linguist, intelligence analyst and MP. I left as an SFC and went to work for about 4 years at a defense contractor after which I started with the Census Bureua. I am now the Chief of the IT Security Office and the senior IT security manager in the Bureau. I am married to Marcella whom I met in the military. She is now a high school social studies teacher so I have been very involved in going to sporting events, plays, concerts and even chaperoning dances. Since I never went to Homecoming or Prom dances while at DHS this has been somewhat interesting. Makes me wish I had done more when I was younger. Workplace I am currently the Chief of the IT Security Office of the US Census Bureau. In this capacity I am the senior IT security authority in the Census Bureau. I have a staff of 16 people who work for me doing everything from vulnerability scans, policy development, certification and accreditation, incident response and verifcation reviews. I started with the Census Bureau in 1991 and have worked my way from a Division Security O...Expand for more
fficer and system administrator during the 1992 Economic Census to my current position. I report directly to the CIO and regularly brief the senior executives on IT security matters. I am a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and a Certified Information Security Manager (CISM). While I am 'eligible' to retire in 5 years, I am hoping to stay through the 2010 Decennial Census. Military When I joined the Army I became a Vietnamese linguist and went to Thailand for a year. I then learned Korean. After that I spent time at Ft. Ord in the Military Police before going to a missle site in Germany. Once there for about 8 months I transferred back to intelligence and spent the remainder of two years with the 7th Corps. Then back to Monterey CA. for Russian language training and then a 4 year assignment at Fort Meade, Maryland. I met my wife there. She was in the Navy and shortly after we were married she was going to be stationed in Japan and I was going back to Germany. We both decided to get out and settle here in Columbia Maryland. We have been married now for almost 25 years.
