Timothy's Story
Life
After graduation from RHS, I attended San Diego State University. I spent my junior year abroad attending Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden where I studied limnology. I graduated from SDSU with a B.S. in Biology with Distinction. I then joined the U.S. Peace Corps and was stationed in the Philippines where I was an aquaculture specialist. After the Peace Corps, I returned to San Diego and started working on my Masters degree. After working as a graduate assistant I joined a start-up company called Aquatic Systems Inc (ASI) and was the hatchery manager. While working for ASI I was awarded a M.S. in Biology with my thesis dealing with ammonia toxicity and ammonia excretion in striped bass. ASI became the World's leading producer of farm-raised hybrid striped bass using intensive aquaculture techinques. At ASI, I was also involved in a number of consulting projects for private and governmental organizations and traveled to many different countries conducting site feasibility studies. Eventually, I left ASI and joined Marineland Aquarium Products as the Director of Aquatic Research. Shortly after joining Marineland I also started working on my doctorate at the University of California, Santa Barbara. My...Expand for more
research involved using molecular techniques such as DNA sequencing, DNA fingerprinting, and DNA probes to study the ecological relationships of nitrifying bacteria in aquatic systems. I was awarded a Ph.D. in ecology, evolution and marine biology by UCSB. My disseration was on the molecular phylogenetics of nitrifying bacteria in aquaria and Mono Lake, CA.
I continued my research at a new laboratory built at Marineland and where I was the Chief Science Officer. My work has lead to the discovery of many new species of bacteria and I have been awarded several U.S. and foreign patents on these bacteria. I have written many scientific papers and popular articles for various national magazines. I am a frequency invited lecturer at national and international meetings and symposiums on filtration and microbiology of aquatic systems.
These days, I am the founder and President of DrTim's Aquatics, LLC, a premium brand of products for freshwater and saltwater aquaria.
I was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council for 12 years, was Council president for 5 years and now serve as past president. I am also the past president and current treasurer of the American Cichlid Association.
