Timothy's Story
It all begins with a text:
"Active shooter NO drill Student? dk-pr. LUV-u pray4me Louder now."
Another day. Another school shooting in America.
Triggered is the story of a school shooting told through metaphor. Rather than presenting a perspective of the continuing madness of this uniquely American epidemic through a straightforward narrative looking to explain why a shooter exists, the story presents this insanity through the prism of child abuse that is explicitly or implicitly allowed to go on without serious address of the problem.
Feather Fairfax is a high school senior sitting at home and watching the story unfold as we all do: on the television. Too sick to attend school that awful day, she is nevertheless integral to story as we go inside her memories to visit the most likely possible suspects. At the same time, the narrative tracks her personal life. The two threads combine to assert that, ultimately, Feather is the hero we have been waiting for even though she never does actually attend school on this horrific day.

e under extreme stress, Feather's story moves back and forth in time in a non-linear manner, often suddenly and without transition. The confusion and uncertainty experienced during such a traumatic event puts the reader right into the mind of Feather as she interacts with the possible shooters. They are all male and they cover the gamut of all the excuses we've heard about why the cause of school shootings is everything but the gun. Her interaction with these possible shooters is juxtaposed against her developing relationship with Jessica, a beautiful and a weird girl who is troubled in ways that Feather never imagined.
Triggered: The Story of a School Shooting tracks the story of the development of that person whom America is still waiting for, the one who is finally triggered into asserting an intention to stop the madness, no matter the cost:
"I am the devil that petrifies monsters like you. I am the beast from your worst nightmares, the one who derives her greatest pleasure—honest to god delight—from inflicting pain on those who can—but don't—keep the monsters away!"
