Timothy's Story
Life
After graduating from Wilson, and pretending to be a college student, I wound up in the U.S. Air Force, and graduated from the Defence Language Institute with a diploma in Russian. After the Air Force, I was successful in getting B.S. (1978) and M.S. (1985) degrees in physics from Cal State L.A. I joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory technical staff in 1981, and retired in 2008. Over the years I have worked as a radio & infrared astronomer, atmospheric physicist, and software/algorithm developer. In my retired life I am now on the Board of Trustees for the Mount Wilson Institute, responsible for funding & managing Mount Wilson Observatory. I have been a volunteer at Mount Wilson, in one way or another, since 1981.

ftware engineering. I worked in the radio-submillimeter astronomy group from 1981-1993, spent a year working as a network administrator for the Earth & Space Sciences Division, worked on the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) project from 1994-2002, and after that worked on software development for the Center for Long Wavelength Astrophysics.
Military
I spent one 4-year tour of duty in the now defunct U.S. Air Force Security Service (USAFSS, 1971-1975). After training at the Defence Language Institute, I remained on the staff of the School of Applied Cryptological Sciences at Goodfellow Air Force Base, San Angelo, Texas. I represented USAFSS twice at the USAF chess championships, but was not strong enough to make the all services championship.
