Tina's Story
Life
I currently live in Rome, GA, where I teach at Berry College, a small, liberal arts college situated on 28,000 acres. I recently was granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor of English, so I will probably be in Rome, GA, for a good spell of time. I teach first-year writing, early and 19th-century American literature, African American literature, women's literature, and film. I love my job, though I would like to live in a larger city; fortunately, Atlanta is only about an hour away. I have a dog, a beagle/bird-dog mix named Sophie, who's been with me for the last ten years, and she and I were acquired by a cat who sashayed onto my porch about four years ago. I travel every chance I get, especially to Europe. My latest destination of choice in New York City (which I never visited when I lived in PA) because I've become a rabid opera fan; I also have completely fallen in love with the city and its bustle, its food, its endless opportunites...Expand for more
for window-shopping and people-watching. Still like all types of music, though, including classic country, bluegrass, Nanci Griffith, Natalie Merchant, delta blues, classic R&B, and some rap/hip hop. I'm fortunate that my job gives me summers off, when I can come back to PA and stay with my brother for several weeks and sit on his porch (both my parents have passed), reading books for fun rather than for work and looking out over that gorgeous PA farmland; I also love to go to auctions when I come back. They don't have them here in the South like they do up there, and the auctioneers are definitely not as gifted. Several years ago, before my dad died, I was able to come up for the fair, even though it was in the midst of fall semester, and that provided a pleasant trip down memory lane. It's funny, though, I hardly know anyone in Quarryville when I come anymore; perhaps you all sometimes feel that way too. Time has a way of proverbially marching on.
