Todd's Story
I loved high school. I started working at a place called Audioland while still a student there. Before I graduated the Viet Nam war was raging and I did not want to go there. I knew many who went, a number who did not come back and those who did seemed changed, deeply so. I wanted to avoid the damned thing, so I joined the Air Force Reserve and spent six years doing that. Audioland ended up quite a big deal and I learned how to do advertising as part of that. In fact advertising became my career. I wound up as a creative guy, making ads. I spent a number of years at a place called BBDO, but started a number of my own businesses, all doing communication stuff of one kind or another involving the car business. I married once and had three children. I married again and had two more. I've been paying child support since 1977 and in fact spoke with wife number two today who thought it might be nice if she added a few more thousand. I figure I'll be paying to the day I die. So, I had all these kids and a well paying career and houses and cars and traveled and all that good stuff. Then around the 911 attacks my business just evaporated. The next thing I know I loose everything -- wife, kids, house, car, et al -- and wind up living at my Dad's house back on Lincoln Street in Mt. Clemen...Expand for more
s. I'll delete the long story about how it came to pass but in 2003 I realized I was an alcoholic. I tell this story other places but I stopped and have been sober up to and including today. After I got sober, I started something truly insane. I started writing music. Songs. I hadn't played a guitar since high school but there I was acting like a fool. To make it worse, I recorded it all. Then a miracle. I replaced the advertising career with being a carpenter. That makes sense. I got a job redoing this couple's house. After working on it a couple months, I arrived at the site to find it burned to the ground. ANother long story goes here but the upshot is, I now live with the Mistress of that house. I designed a new house to replaced the one that burned down and she and I and her four kids live in the thing, Since we moved in, I've recorded two CD's worth of original music. Is it any good? Hell, I don't know. I'm playing all the stuff and singing, none of which I do very well. But, I'm doing the best I can with what I got. I'm on MySpace and YouTube and other places. toddbendler.com, too. What with the demise of the car business and the housing business I'm back selling electronics, retail, 12 hours a day. I'm amazed I can still stand on my feet that long, but there I am.
