Todd's Story

Life My time in the service has prepaired me to deal with adversity and stress. After I was TAD at NAF Atsugi in 1998 I was diagnosed with Parkinson disease in 2000 by the VA. Jokingly some of my friends asked me if was having the DT's or carpal tunnel syndrome . After my Navy retirement I worked at NMCSD for 3 years in civil service. My condition became worse and I retired for real in 2003. I had a deep brain neurostimulator implanted in May of 2005 . The implant helps but is not 100 percent effective. I started my odyssey with VA 5 years ago. I was sitting in a VA clinic one day and some guy saw me shaking and asked if my condition was service connected. I replyed "with 20 years in the Navy what do you think." the guy shut up. The next time I was at the VA for a vocational training lecture, somebody asked me "Are you shaking to get a higher disability rating". I was told once "Your lucky to be military retired with Parkinson Disease." The VA is filled with some bitter veterans and hearthless staff. Thank God not everybody at the VA is like that. I like to quote "In you were to rush in the room right now and announce that you had struck a deal with God .. or whomever in which the 10 years since my diagnosis could be magically be taken away, traded in for 10 more years as a person I was before, I would without a moment's hesitation, tell you to take a hike" Micheal J Fox 2002 School I remember going to football games, playing miniature golf, going to the movies, and Chinese fire drills. I was a hanging out with BIll, John, Cycil and Doris. I used to go camping with the Boy Scouts in New Mexico, I liked to go camping and exploring in the desert. working at the concession stands at UTEP games. UTEP must be the worst college football team still. I went to visit my brother in basic training and we would go bowling or watch a movie. Sometimes we would do wheely's with our cars out in the desert. When my dad retired from the Army, we moved from EL PASO to Holt MI. I am glad to know the kids at Holt were kind to me. king back on things now, I had a lot of growing up to do, especially when it came to love. it's all a mater of unconditional love and how true you are to your self. In maters of the heart love is based on how well you are loved by others. It never rains in El Paso But as the song goes, "Man when it rains, it really pours." I remember gas for less then a dollar. Using fire crackers in the desert and making camp fires. My first car was a 1966 Mercury Comet with a 490 engine. I played freshman and B team football and track team, my playing days ended with my hands getting burned in 1976. I finally got back in shape when i was with the Marines as a Corpsman. Running 8 miles a day and going on 25 to 50 mile hikes. College I went to work two days after I retired from the Navy. I was a hospital corpsman and In my last unit all my MSC officers had master degrees. As for the enlisted we either had bachelor degrees or and associates ,. My chief had a master's degree.. Military Two and 1/2 years in the Army National Guard. 20 years in the Navy. As the old saying goes, seen that, done that, been there. The Navy has been very good to me, it was the best of the times and at moments it could be the worst of times. I have traveled the world and visted the followlng countries:Norway, Denmark, England, Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Israel, Tunisia, China, Philippines, Korea, Japan, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. I have seen sun, rain, ocean, desert, mountains, swamps, jungle, forests, snow, ice, and wild life. Camp Pendleton 1/5, Camp Lejeune 1/8, 2nd CEB and MAG-46 El Toro.
