Todd's Story

Life Time sure zips past us doesn’t it? It is amazing how easy it was to become disconnected and disassociated from all those friends I use to have at good ol' Tam High. I read the list of names on this site and had so many flashbacks and fond memories rush through my head that I figured I should join the herd and sign up to see what you all are up to. Where to start? I partied like a rock star at SDSU - played soccer on the JV team - got kicked out of school for being on AP for 2 semesters - moved home - worked - moved to Colorado and ski-bummed for 2 ski seasons at Steamboat - moved back to San Rafael - went to COM - transferred to UCSC and graduated with a degree in geology in 1996. Worked in SF and Oakland for about 7 years for engineering firms and lived in South San Francisco and Oakland. I married another geologist, Carrie Randolph (from Fresno) out at Olema - we meet in school at Santa Cruz. Carrie finished her masters at SF State and we moved to Golden, Colorado about 3 years ago to get out of the Bay Area for a while and so I could go to graduate school at the Colorado School of Mines. I will graduate in December, 2005. We bought a house in a great area right at the toe of the Rockies - 45 minutes to skiing at Winter Park, Arapaho Basin, or Loveland, and 1.25 hrs to Copper. We have great access to biking, hiking, rafting, and camping and all those things I love to do. I miss the ocean, greenery, moisture, and the diversity of the Bay Area, but we love it here. I spent 8 weeks last summer in Eritrea, East Africa performing the design level engineering...Expand for more
geology and geotechnical investigations for a large new dam and water supply project for one of the larger cities in that country. I also found my masters engineering design report/project while there. For my masters project I designed a subsurface dam that will impound groundwater in an alluvial aquifer and significantly increase the total supply to the local city wells and provide more water further into the dry season. Hopefully this project will actually get funding through the UN and WHO, and I can go back for the construction. I currently work for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation evaluating the integrity and safety of water supply structures and design of new water projects. Carrie and I are headed to Kasakhstan (a former Soviet republic, south of Russia and north of all the other "Stans") this Christmas or possibly in January. We are adopting two children, a boy and girl, between 6 and 18 months each. Should be a big year for us and our lives are about to totally change I am sure. We are really looking forward to these additions to our family (currently composed of Carrie and myself, and our 3 dogs). Anybody out there who has also adopted? This is one of the most frustrating, trying, and difficult things I have ever experienced. It will all be worth it in the end, and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I guess that about sums it up. Life sure goes by fast, and it seems to go faster and faster every year - maybe that is why old folks drive so slow. Hope everybody who reads this is doing well and is enjoying their lives. Cheers, Todd Loar
