Tom's Story
Life
Started out as a climber with a tree service in 1971. A tumble from an oak a year later had me studying other opportunities and finally fell back on a career in journalism. Had a degree in it but did not intend to use it. Reporting wasn't much safer. A fall through a plate glass window in a warehouse fire in 1981 left me with few of the original tendons in my right hand and arm. Worked as a reporter for the Ottumwa Courier, Clinton Herald and Cedar Rapids Gazette. Started with The Des Moines Register and Tribune in 1978. Married a piano teacher; 50 students every week. Our other daughter fihished a teaching assignment in Maracaibo,Venezuala, taught Spanish at the University of Iowa for two years and now is earninng a doctorate at THE Ohio State University; from Hawkeye to Buckeye .
Des Moines is a nice place. We sometimes climb the many steps to the capitol dome on Saturdays. Very careful to watch my step.
Update #1: April 16, 2012. Retired. Company made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
Update #2: Aug. 28, 2012. We became grandparents. What a cutie.
Update #3: May 18, 2013. My wife, Diane, died of pancreatic cancer, 19 months after being diagnosed.
Update #4: February 2015. Engaged to marry Dr. Janet Allen, retired pediatric oncologist.
Update #5: Dec. 28, 2015. Married.
