More about Tom:"Dear Graduate Students, The Lion and the Lamb Isaiah 11:6 The wolf shall dwell with the lamb and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. Isaiah 65:25 The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent's food. They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain," says the LORD. "The Lion & The Lamb" This is not an exact quote from scripture but rather a combination of thoughts from a couple of verses. Both of these passages deal with the kingdom age on the earth after the Lord Jesus Christ returns to reign on the earth as King of kings. The ferocious beasts (like the lion) will live peaceably with the gentle animals (like the lamb). Certainly, this will be a literal reality on the earth. However, this picture is also symbolic of the peace that will pervade the entire earth. When preachers speak of the lion and the lamb lying down together, they are referring to the time of peace when Jesus will reign as King over the earth. The verses in Isaiah project the future. In 21st century colleges, philosophy is now subject to powerful cultural trends that include a distrust of the public realm, a utilitarian habit of mind where only what is countable actually counts, and a widespread assumption that "values" are mere preferences to be tabulated and traded, rather than critically assessed and debated. In addition to the pursuit of academic excellence, BarnHam Graduate School & Seminary remains committed to the goals and mission statement of fostering accord. In our Mission Statement we affirm that "we encourage harmony and unity among Christians, counselors and educators. tation, showing people how to do their own research and applying truth to life. A final goal is the ultimate activation of men and women into effective Christian service, in any environment to which he or she may be called to minister." Today, seminaries, graduate colleges and universities no longer strive to achieve such formation, but instead focus only upon intellectual development. Graduate students enrolling at BarnHam Graduate School & Seminary are not only challenged in classes, through extracurricular activities and with regard to intellectual life, but also within moral and ethical beliefs and the place of religious faith in their lives. It is time to reclaim the public role of Christianity. This does not mean rejecting the rigorous pursuit of intellectual knowledge. By venturing into the agora and taking the Christian life and ideas into the world, Jesus Christ did not abandon standards of knowledge. Rather, He set the standard and embodied a different type of rigor, one sensitive to and partially defined by social context. As aspiring graduate students desiring to change life as masters of your field, and for experts moving to the leading edge, you make a small indentation in the outer boundary of knowledge. The questions that are raised are different in kind from the questions asked in fields such as social and political philosophy. The insights of graduate students are quite relevant to society in the 21st century. How can Christian insights be translated or integrated with other disciplines and with the wider world? Political philosophy contains insights important to practical issues, but our concern is with the different ways in which Christian counseling and healing theory (whether in political philosophy, or science, or epistemology, or any other area of philosophy) becomes involved with social practice. Ideas do not exist in the ether; they take form within a material context that shapes them in subtle and profound ways. The current institutional dimensions of Christian counseling, Mediation, Chaplaincy, and Doctoral training, teaching, and promotion need to be thought through afresh. We need to train future graduate level Christians so they can recognize philosophical disputes happening in the world and insert themselves artfully into the public and private spheres. Henry Ford said, "It has been my observation that most people get ahead during the time that others waste." His creations did not gain recognition until he was in his 40s.
