Tom's Story
I was just an average guy; wannabe athlete, played a little guitar. My girl was Sarah Fleshman. Was Sports Editor of the yearbook my senior year.
Went to Towson. Graduated in 72 (took a year off in 71, to travel the country in my VW bus) Got more into music, songwriting, and performing, ala Dylan, S &G, Taylor, CSN&Y and others. With an English degree I, of course, went into carpentry. Moved to Atlanta, then western North Carolina. Got interested in whitewater racing (canoes and kayaks). Made the US team in '77, went to the world championship in Austria (finally became an athlete). Finished 12th in C-2 slalom.
Shortly after, left for Alaska to work more construction. Met an married an Eskimo/Norweigian woman. Had two children (boys) to go with boy and girl my wife had by a previous marriage. Got my private pilot's license and bought an airplane, began bush pilot era, while running my own construction company. Transitioned to local government construction (Capital Projects). ...Expand for more
Diagnosed with oral cancer in 2003 ( even though I was not a tobacco user and only rarely used alcohol). Treated aggressively at MD Cancer Center in Houston. Cancer free for 11 years now. After working as a City Manager and a Borough Manager, retired from Municipal service. Spent 2010 year in Iraq (construction again, project manager). Cancer and other stressful events have returned me to my role of a solitary wanderer.
My bucket list includes buying a motorhome and / or a motorcycle to aid in my wandering. Life has been brightened in 2013 by the birth of two grandchildren (one to each son). Still working as a project manager.
I never mad a reunion. 77' was in Austria, 87' was freshly married to a woman not amused by the idea of a reunion, '97 death in the family, '07 -think I had been between jobs for 8 months- probably couldn't afford it. Well there's always 2017, if I can still see and hear.
Hello to fellow Cavaliers. Peace be with those who have not made it this far.
