Tom's Story
I grew up in Antioch California. It was a small town on the San Joaquin River 50 miles south of Sacramento. I was the third of four Boyd Boys. My mom always said girls were too much trouble. I attended Holy Rosary School, Antioch Junior HS and Antioch High School. I went to Diablo Valley College for two years before going on going on to San Jose State University, where I graduated in 1977 with a degree in Business Management. I had a minor in Real Estate, and obtained my RE Broker's license. I thought I would go to work in my father's real estate office on Bethel Island, but God had other plans for me. In 1971, I went on World Campus Afloat, a floating university that went around the world. I went to many countries. This is where I developed a love of travel and an interest in orther people and cultures. Travel is still a real passion.
I was part of a swimming family. I was on a swimming team from the time I was 4 years old until I graduated from SJSU. I still swim nearly every day, and I love it. It's great exercise. My other interests are in cooking, restaurants, wine, movies, art, music, dance, gardening, history, politics, family history, geneology, investing, real estate, and hanging out with family and friends.
In August 1973, while living in the dorms at San Jose State, I met my best friend and the love of my life. On March 20th, 1974, we made a lifelong c...Expand for more
ommittment to live together, work together, and support each other always. It has been an amazing journey. We started our own mortgage company in San Jose in Oct 1984, after working together as loan officers for two years. We built the company over a 20 year period, and when we got the opportunity, we sold it in 2004. We now spend our time looking after our investments, but most of our time is spent hanging out together. We are still best buddies. We have rarely been apart in our 49 years together. We are loving retirement, and spend nine months out of the year in our mountain home in Boulder Creek, near Santa Cruz, and the other three months in our 2nd home in west Maui. We love Maui, and are active in our condo association there. My partner's name is Steve Lampkin. He loves architectural design, so we visit a lot of homes designed by Frank LLoyd Wright, and Green and Green. On October 18th 2008, we were married in St James Park in San Jose, just a few blocks from where we met on the campus at SJSU. Presiding at our wedding was one of our dorm buddies, who went on to become President of the Santa Clara Co. Board of Supervisors. We are active in the struggle for marriage equality, and support civil rights for gay people both in California and Hawaii.
I enjoy visiting with friends, both old and new. Drop me a line and let me know what is up with you.
Aloha,
Tom
