Tom's Story
Life
After high school, I went college at Madison (plus a year in Madrid
Spain) studying computing, languages, and music--plus like most
folks then and there, partying. After six years of avoiding leaving
school, I finally got out with a BA in Spanish and CompSci and an
MS in CompSci.
I moved to Dallas for my first, last, and only job in the cut-throad
world of corporate slavery. This wasn't all that much fun, so I
ditched it. I became my own boss and moved to Colorado in 1991.
I run my own business doing corporate training in computer programming,
both in my Boulder training room and travelling around the country
and world. My passport gets a lot of activity. I've written four
books on Perl programming, all published by O'Reilly and Associates,
the most recent of which being the 3rd edition of "Programming
Perl", the Camel book.
I take summers off from any serious work, because there's no place

er to be for summer in the whole wide world that the High
Rockies. Originally this meant chilling out during June through
August, but it's now more like May through September. I'd rather
have a life than more cash. Most of my summer is spent pursuing
extreme sports, like tackling Colorado 14ers, running the Grand
Canyon, or putting on a heavy pack and getting as far from technology
and cities as I possibly can. Each summer week sees me putting
70-100 miles horizontally and 3-5 miles vertically under my feet.
Summer is also full of all kinds of really cool festivals here in
Colorado, like live theatre, mountain biking, and the bustling
bluegrass and classical music scenes.
My worst vice is staying up too late reading or chatting with friends
while drinking thick black coffee or chewy microbrews or smokey
single malts, but still waking up early enough to see the new day's
sunrise--just as I've done all my life.
