Tom's Story

Life I left for Northern California the summer after graduation. I spent the first 2 winters working at a ski resort, with my summers spent at a camp for Stanford Alumni and their families.I apprenticed under a German Chef for 14 months, and then spent 18 months under a Dutch baker, learning and honing my culinary skills. For the next 8 years I split my time:8 months in Tahoe and the other 4 in Davis, CA.In 1986, the company asked me to open a new account in Santa Cruz. After a couple of years, the company had me open up similar accounts in San Francisco. I was to then head off to Bakersfield, when I decided to leave the company and stick around in Santa Cruz. I spent the next couple of years doing a bunch of fun stuff(tour director, bus driver, school food program director, and even managing both a french pastry shop and a mexican restaurant) I jumped back into the corporate world for another 5 years, thinking that was what I was supposed to do.Ha! thday, and realized that I wasn't having any fun, and that at the least when I turned 40, I should be having fun. So I quit...no plan,no ideas, just that I needed to find something to do that was fun.Trusting that God had a plan(although He never does the reveal until you are knee deep in the middle of it),I started a long journey into the Bed and Breakfast Industry, including a 4 year stint in Sausalito,CA, managing a beautiful 22 room property, where I also resided. The view from the deck was of San Francisco and the Bay. The property sold late in '05, and I spent 6 months transitioning the hotel to a rehab and treatment facility. I have returned to the Monterey Bay area, working for Inns by the Sea, a group of 8 Inns from Carmel to Half Moon Bay. I manage all the Inns from an office located in downtown Carmel. I currently reside in Pacific Grove, just a block from the water and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Once again I am blessed to be in a beautiful place, working at something I enjoy.
