Tom's Story

Hello after so many years ! Before detailing the specifics of my life these past 49 years, I'd like to say what has surprised me ( based on expectations from 1961): I didn't know what to expect in a professional career - I didn't know what a career path was or difference between professional, working,.... My family experience was that people worked , often pretty long and strenuous days, and provided for their families.I was accepted at BC in Accounting and changed my major to Mathematics based on a conversation with the Metropolitan Life Ins. rep.at a conversation around our dining room table --- 60's, satellites, ...Until then I didn't know that careers based on Mathematics existed. That impromptu conversation changed my directions and clearly the intervening 49 years. I've enjoyed a personally rewarding and satisfying career ( with the normal bumps in the road). I'm really hoping to see many classmates and share 50 years of memories. I graduated from Boston College in '65 and continued on to University of Maryland for an MS and Ph.D - all Mathematics. Joined Raytheon, Bedford in ...Expand for more
'71 for a short stay ( decided I was not ready for a large company), had a slightly longer stay at a consulting company ( math and signal processing, data management,...) and moved to Lowell Tech in Fall of '73 ( needed to consult a map to find my way from Bedford to Lowell). Spent my career at Lowell through 2 name changes ( U Lowell, UMass Lowell) with only a 2 year detour to start a consulting company - left because I missed working with young people and the freedom allowed in a university. Started in Mathematics Dept., founded the Computer Science Dept. and then alternated between senior administration ( VP, CIO,...) and faculty positions until retiring in June, 2010. I'm still working at Lowell on a part-time basis assisting IT and Facilities. Married while in grad. school, have two children ( John and Jill - both living in the area); divorced in early 70's. Have been with my wife, Kary, for over 30 years but married since 2000.We live on Plum Island, Newburyport. Can't include direct email address so if you go to the UMass Lowell site and enter my name, you'll find me. Tom
