Tom's Story

After high school I married Louise Hartman on October 24, 1959 and worked at the Camas papermill for a few months before joining the Navy on Feb. 15, 1960. I served five years and was trained as an Electronic Technician. Our youngest daughter was born two months after I was discharged in 1965. Then I worked at Alcoa for a couple of years before attending Clark J. C. full time. Louise's folks helped us out a lot in those days by renting us their old place in Orchards. It's gone now and so is the Denny's Restaurant that was built on the old property. We owe much to friends and family who have helped us over the years. In 1969 I finished at Clark College and began working for Pacific Northwest Bell as a pick-up and delivery truck driver while attending PSC part-time. I became a Christian during that time (1974). Eventually I was transferred to Kent, WA. in 1976 and I retired from Qwest Communications in 2003. Louise and I have three children, Kevin, Karin and Kathleen. We have ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Kevin, Karin and their families live nearby but Kathleen (Katy) and family live in Palmdale, CA so we visit them almost every year. In '06 and '07 we went RVing for part of the year and enjoyed it a lot. We did it again in 2010 and 2012. We have enjoyed staying in Branson, MO three times, a couple of weeks at a time. latives in Nebraska and Iowa and then come back to WA via Arizona, California, Utah and Idaho to visit other family and friends. Although Louise (her work is never done, you know) and I both retired in '03, I worked more than a year with Census 2010 and took part in five separate Census operations. It was an "interesting" experience. Louise and I are active members of Our Savior's Baptist Church in Federal Way, WA. One reason we can't be taking off and staying gone is that we miss our church family while we are away. I also like doing volunteer service at the King County Jail, located in the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center, Kent. In Dec. 2013 we sold the home we bought when we moved to Kent, WA. Now we live in Tacoma near our daughter and her family. It was fun to see everyone who made it to the 57th reunion of the Class of '59 in July 2016. Thanks to those who planned it. Wish we hadn't been late but traffic was a "bear." Sad to see how many have passed that I wish I could have seen one more time. Concerning the future, I will "keep on keeping on" as long as the Lord gives me strength. I hope all who read this will, if you haven't already, consider the person and work of Jesus Christ on behalf of us sinners; He died, was buried and He rose again according to the Scriptures. He has promised that all who trust Him will live forever, even if we die before He comes again! Maranatha!
