Tom's Story

Life As of February 26, 2019: Now living in the Jacksonville-St. Augustine, FL, area! Still working as a consultant helping big and small companies that want to do business with the Federal Government. Also, driving for Lyft & Uber for fun!. My son and his family (including almost 12 1/2-year old granddaughter) live in Ft. Lauderdale. My daughter and her family (including almost 13-year old and almost 10 1/2-year old granddaughter) live in Tacoma, WA, area. Trying to visit each of them about once a quarter. My step-daughter is lives in Raleigh, NC, and works for Epic Games.. Oceana '68ers visiting Jax-St. Augustine area, please let me know so we may get together and catch up.... Have a great remainder of 2019! ------------------------------------------ As of January 1, 2010: Well, business has picked up. Seems that a lot of companies want to do business with the government. Am up to seven clients, mainly small businesses, in fields from IT to XLERATOR hand dryers to Architectural Design & Engineering. They all want to offer their goods and services to the government and I'm having fun helping them to do so.... Went out to Seattle area last week to spend a few days with two of my three granddaughters (3 1/2 and 1). Had a great time. The door is still open if any of you Oceana '68'ers come to the Washington, DC, area. Would be a great visit in 2010. Happy New Year! Tom ------------------------------------- As of August 1, 2009: I returned to the Pentagon in July 2008 when I became the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Reserve Affairs. Spent almost 10 months in the job overseeing the Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, and Civil Air Patrol. On August 30, 2009, I "finally" left government and took the big step of starting my own federal business development...Expand for more
/government relations consulting business from scratch. Am in the process (and they say the Government is slow) of generating clients. So far, have one paid client, one pro bono client, and about a dozen good prospects among small companies wanting to do business with the government. Check back next year to see how my adventure has progressed - successful or gave up and went to work for a firm???? :-) ------------------------------------- As of June 24, 2007: On September 1, 2002, I "retired" from the Navy as a Captain after more than 30 years. Following retirement, I worked Legislative Affairs for the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon for a little over four years. I was asked to become the Senior Advisor and Special Assistant to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and have been at VA since November 2006. I am re-married, have two children (son, 29, and daughter, 32) who live in the Pacific Northwest. I have a 15-year old step-daughter who lives with my wife and me in Northern Virginia. I enjoyed my career in the Navy. I spent many years flying P-3 anti-submarine aircraft all over the world. My last 4 1/2 years in the Navy were spent in the Pentagon as the Senior Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. During my tour of duty, I visited every continent (yes, including Antarctica), over 40 countries (some multiple times - including Bosnia and Kosovo), and every state. The purpose of our trips was to visit National Guardsmen and Reservists serving our nation throughout the world. I enjoy the Washington, DC, area although I miss the Bay Area. I do a lot of traveling in my current job. One of these days, I'll leave government and get a "real job" :-) ... hopefully, back in Northern California (at least part of the year).
