Tom's Story
Life
I was raised in Arcola, Va. and graduated from Loudoun County H.S. Following graduation from the University of Richmond in 1969 I taught History and Government and coached baseball and football at Broad Run H.S.and became the Activity Director in 1974. I returned to LCHS as baseball coach in 1978 and in 1980 made a career change - I moved to Newport News, Va. and joined the City Police Department. I served in most areas of the department including Patrol, Investigations, Administration and six years heading the Internal Affairs Division. I retired with the rank of Captain in 1998 and moved back to Leesburg where I now work for Civilian Police International (CPI) conducting background investigations and coordinating security checks with the State Department. CPI contracts with the United Nations providing police officers for its missions in Kosovo, Haiti and Bosnia. Loudoun County has certainly changed since the 60's and 70's, and it is great to hear from friends, classmates and students who can remember those "Good Old Days."
I'm married with three children and two grandchildren. Our daughter graduated from George Mason Univ. and our older son from Va. Tech. Our younger son passed away during his freshman year at Bridgewater College. I still enjoy playing golf and doing historical research and networking with old friends.

of Richmond I taught history and government in the Loudoun County, Va. Public Schools for ten years. I also coached baseball and football and served as Athletic Director at Broad Run H.S.
In 1980, I joined the Newport News, Va. Police Department. I spent six years working as a patrol officer and with the Department's Accreditation team. In 1986, I was promoted to Lieutenant and served in the Uniformed Patrol Division, the Office of Internal Affairs and as Commander of the Training Division. Promoted to Captain in 1991,I spent five years as head of the Department's Internal Affairs Division and a tour as head of Vice/Narcotics. During this period I served a term as President of the Virginia Internal Affairs Investigators Association and taught throughout the Commonwealth for the Department of Criminal Justice. My final two years were spent as Commander of the South Patrol Division in Uniformed Operations.
I thoroughly enjoyed my years with the Newport News Police Department and feel fortunate to have been associated with the fine men and women with whom I served. The memories are for the most part good and the friendships made will last a lifetime. And the friendships and associations made during my Newport News years have been very helpful in my retirement job conducting background investigations and coordinating security checks for Civilian Police International (CPI).
