Tom's Story
Life
At the tender age of 40-something I find myself back in Michigan. In 1982, having graduated from pharmacy school and working for Perry Drugs (remember them?), I moved to Chicago and spent the next 8 years in the big city. In 1983, I met my partner Dev, a folksinger by trade. In 1989, we left the charming Midwest and went briefly to Sonoma, CA to help with Dev's family. We ended up in Portland, OR, living there from 1990 to 1998. While in Portland, I quit practicing pharmacy and returned to my first love, working with books, and got a job at Powell's Books, a large new and used bookstore in Portland. After having held 7 jobs in 10 years as a pharmacist, I found where I belonged and worked 7 years at Powell's, until it was time to return to Michigan. While in Oregon, Dev made frequent trips to see his family in northern California and eventually both his parents passed on peacefully. We decided then that we...Expand for more
wanted to come back to the midwest and enjoy my parents' company while they were still young enough and well enough to get around and enjoy themselves and haven't regretted the decision for a moment. When we returned to Michigan, we decided to settle in Ann Arbor and greatly enjoy the area. Funny, for having spent 25 years in Michigan, I knew little about Ann Arbor outside of how to get to the stadium. Dev has nicely established his music career here and performs frequently in various coffee shops, clubs and even Borders bookstores. And speaking of Borders, I managed to land a job in corporate headquarters for them here in A2 and am an assistant buyer and enjoying myself thoroughly. Dev and I even made it to the 25th reunion in October, 1999 and had a great time seeing some of the old crowd. Drop a line if you like and let me know what you're up to and maybe we can even have a cup of coffee or a beer sometime!
