Tom's Story

A very special lady recently reminded me that I may want to update my profile since some of the info it contained was no longer accurate. So I guess I'll have a go at a slight makeover. This part is still valid - I didn't actually graduate from Northwest High School but count myself a Huskie since with the exception of my last semester my HS years were all spent at NW. I actually graduated one semester early from Beloit Memorial High School in Beloit, Wisconsin. After graduation I returned to Omaha and managed to land a job working in production at Control Data Corporation. Nothing like being young, having a steady income and limited responsibilities - it was a riot. I'm happy to say that after all these years and miles, I'm still in touch with a handful of ex-CDC'ers. Along the way, and between parties and hangovers, I actually managed to get a useful university degree. In 1987 I received my BSBA in Management from UNO. Mom was happy but I still didn't have a job. At the time my parents were back in Germany where my father had a 3 year contract with Digital Equpment. As a graduation present they bought me a ticket over and I made the mistake of interviewing while I was visiting. To make a long story short, I got the job and moved to southern Germany in April 1987 with 3 suitcases and alot of hope. I've been in ...Expand for more
Germany ever since and currently live in Bremen, about an hour drive from the North Sea. The only similarity to Nebraska is that its flat as a pancake but without the charming grain silos dotting the landscape. Life overseas has treated me well. I've moved through various positions at different companies and in some fairly unrelated industries. It hasn't been boring and I've relished the opportunities created by being an American in Germany. In early 2012 I decided to leave corporate life for awhile and concentrate more on travel and enjoying the weather in Spain - especially when its winter in northern Europe. I have a wonderful 11 year old son who I'm happy to report is being raised to be a good Cornhusker. He loves American football, baseball, and muscle cars. Thanks to the fact that he attends an international school here he speaks flawless English and has acquired my Midwest twang - along with a lot of expressions that make no sense to the Germans. We try to get back to the US fairly frequently. I just completed a 3 week tour with him that included 6 wonderful days in Omaha including a great evening attending the College World Series final. A big thanks to Frannie! I do like to hear from old friends and classmates although I admit to being a bit slow about answering my emails - I do answer them eventually.
