Tom's Story
Hola mi amigos y amigas. Greetings from Colonia de Pescadores, Puerto Morelos, Quintata Roo, Mexico. After an interesting year in Viet Nam, I started a 36+ year career as a commercial banker. I received my undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Columbus College (now Columbus State University) and my graduate degree in Banking from Southern Methodist University. Banking moved us around from Seattle to Miami with Texas often mixed in there somewhere. In 2003, Cherilyn and I began to seriously plan for our future. We decided to completely change our lives and opened a sport fishing business on Isla Cozumel (pescamexicana.com). Two years later we moved to the Yucatan on a permanent basis. We formed a Mexican corporation that allows us to live, work and own real estate in Mexico. Living in the Yucatan is similar to living in Baytown in the 1950's. Children play outside instead of watching TV and adults spend a lot time talking to their neighbors. I could describe our new life as very tranquil. Colonia de Pescadores is a small fishing village (colony) on the Caribbean and we are the only Gringos that live here. Our home is half way between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. When we are not fishing, we host weekly Christian fellowship groups in Cancun Centro near the zona hotelera. We also offer an English speaking Sunday church service in Cancun Centro behind the bullfight arena. (cancunchristianfellowship.com). Many are surprised that I became an Evangelist. I am a teacher, not a preacher. I also write Christian study lessons that are avaialable...Expand for more
for and used by other study groups and churches in the Yucatan, the US and other countries. We enjoy mission work, sidewalk restaurants with friends in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, exploring the Yucatan and spending all the time our life allows at the beach in Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen. Yucatan life equates to "What you are willing to give up to have what you really love and want". We have three children and a grand daughter scattered around the US and a great dog named Gus that guards our villa in the Colonia. If you are ever visiting our Caribbean paradise, be sure and call us. Please check our websites for our US phone numbers and email addresses. Hasta pronto, Tom
Update 1/31/10: Many have emailed me and asked me what I miss the most about the US. That is easy and here it goes. 1. Tony Mandola's Gulf Coast Kitchen on West Gray 2. Lopez Mexican Restaurant on S. Wilcrest Drive and 3. What-a-Burger anywhere, anytime.
Update 7/2/2010: In April, we accepted the responsibility of supporting an orphanage in Colonia Alfredo Bonfil. Casa Hogar para Ninos Esperanza curretnly cares for fifteen children ages eighteen months to seventeen years.
It has a twenty year history of helping children with no other means of support. Most children there come from a background of physical or sexual abuse. Look at cancunchristianfellowship.com for additional information. If you would like to receive a mission request letter, please email me.
PS: If you would like to receive our weekly mens's and ladies' group study lessons, please drop me an email.
