Tom's Story

1973 seems like yesterday, yet a lifetime ago. School memories are fleeting now. I married in 1978 and moved to Victoria to attend University. My goal was to study Social Work, however, I became interested in Economic History. It is still a passion of mine. When I graduated jobs were non-existent surprise, surprise. The universe led me into the field of Mental Health. I spent 15 years working with individuals with various forms of Illness. Physically I had to leave and I did go onto become a Social Worker. I spent the remainder of my working career working with Young adults with Mental Health and Substance Use issues. It was extremely frustrating and rewarding. I will Officially retire December 31 this year. It will not be a big adjustment as I have been unable to work for Medical reasons for 6 years now. At first it was difficult, howeve...Expand for more
r, I have adjusted what I do to what I am capable of doing. Gardening is out and Family History Research is more common. In many ways I have simply returned to things Historic. How surprised my Social Study teachers and all my teachers would be. I admit I was anything but a stellar student and avoided books and learning anything at all costs. I still live in Victoria where we raised a daughter who to my dismay became a Social Worker, I thought she should take up a Trade and avoid working closely with people, She works in a field dear to me as I had a sister that used the Services, I guess I should not be surprised as she grew up attending meeting to access Services in this area for my sister. Have a wonderful day and Stay Safe and Healthy! 2020 has been a year like no other in my lifetime, Nothing much surprises me at this point in my life.
