Tom's Story

Hello, As you already know my name, I will go on to let you know a little about me. I am from Oregon and live 55 miles west of Portland in the coast range of mountains near a little town called Yamhill, Oregon, population 917 souls, last count. I live with my Schnauzer on 60 private acres of forested land at the crest of a hill that overlooks my neighbors vineyard and a commanding view looking south into a deep valley of meadows, forested hills and vineyards. I have lived here since January 1993 when I moved back home to Oregon, after spending a productive time in the Los Angeles area. (1985-1993). One of the milestones from life in Southern California, was the design/conceptualization, of the then innovative ‘open kitchen’ Chinese restaurant for which I provided construction documents and then project managed the design/development of a chain of restaurants called Pic-Up-Stix; then localized in Orange County, still growing to this day across the South West. But there was a lot of trouble in river city, and so escaping the traffic, violence and drama of LA in those years; I retreated back to my origins in Oregon. As a natural artist and active participant in the field of Architectural and Interior Design for the last 35 + years, I have enjoyed a productive and fruitful career, with many noteworthy project and accomplishments in the private and commercial sector around the world. Recently, projects have taken me to Russia, China and repeated visits to South America. Much had changed in the world of architecture since I opened my first office in 19...Expand for more
68, and now with semi-retirement, I decided to go back to school to finish my Bachelors, started so long ago, with my return to college in 2007, graduating last December 2010 with a (Cida certified) Bachelor of Science Degree in Interior Design from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Currently enrolled here at the Academy’s MFA program in Interior Architecture, I hope to close the gap of accreditation, matching my life time experience with a MFA in Interior Architecture & Design. To follow, academic plans include post graduate work (PHD)in the area of commercial interior design and merchandising theory with the intention of teaching and lecturing, along with a little painting and gallery work on the side. From my studio, I am preparing a series of modern impressionistic paintings that depict architectural details from the various countries I have visited. Also being produced are coachwork illustrations of classic motorcars. Currently, aside from my AAU, online educational process, I am involved in Architectural & Interior Design Projects in Brazil, and Oregon, and the hobby of collecting Cadillacs. Currently I am the activities chairman for the Cadillac and Lasalle Club,Pacific Northwest Region. My héros and inspiration are the authors of the 'International Style' of Architecture and Design, Mies van der Rohe, Philip Johnson and le Corbusier. My current age is 62. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be Dead. I was so completely surprised that I am not.. PHD by age 65 I share my home with my Schnauzer, which I find charming.
