Tom's Story
Life
let's see - after graduation I went to UCLA and then Cal Poly- decided not to be a dentist and the artistic side of me ended up becaming a Landscape Architect/Planner. We’ve worked/lived successively in Newport Beach, Hawaii, Laguna Beach, Houston, Washington DC, after starting that office with 2 others and growing to 30’people. Since 1991 back in Laguna Beach. Been having fun working around the world-,Asia, Middle East, Central America, Ireland, and Great Britain (and even Russia for one project) - a total of 34 countries . I’ve been lead designer for Resorts/ Hotels, New Towns/Master Planning, Theme Parks, and large scale Mixed Use/Commercial projects. I was a key design team member for the master plans for 2 of the 10 tallest buildings in the world. (those are the Kuala Lumpur City Center Project and the “Downtown Dubai”/Burj Dubai-now Burj Khalifa projects). Our firm did Lots of fun projects including re-doing most of Universal Studios public spaces and newer rides, Disney project...Expand for more
s, 2 lands for Universl Studios Beijing (Minions and Jurassic World) and even Knotts Berry Farm renovations and change to public areas/rides in 2023. The hours were often brutal but it was what I was meant to do .
I married Monica Simpson (whom I met at Cal Poly) in 1989 after 12 years of living together. We've been together since 1977. Shes been fantastic (smart, successful planner/designer as well) and she still looks 55 today. My older son is currently completing his medical residency in Salt Lake City. Our younger son is working in Seattle as a Financial Analyst/ Manager.
As a family we enjoy skiing, biking and travel, and we try to get somewhere fun at least once a year. After 3 covid delays since 2020, Monica and I did our lond- discussed vacation trip to Egypt in fall 2023. Been working on my photography as well -just did an Owens Valley trip with Monica.
Last fall we did a 3 week trip to France with friends for a wine trip.
I finally retired in June of 2024 and i'm loving it.
