Tom's Story

Hello friends from long ago! 26 years has turned into a lot of memories, funny how high school is etched so strongly in all of us. I guess it was that all the beginnings of adulthood and our first grown up experiences occurred there. It has been fun scrolling through all of the names and targeting the ones with photos. I will some day get around to posting my own. I have much to be proud of. I have 3 great kids. Hannah is 15, a level 8 gymnast who competes in Club Gymnastics and also for Tahoma High School. She made it to the High School State Championships last year as a Freshman. Even better is her drive and demeanor. I remember at 15 how much of a stubborn know it all I was, Hannah is much more respectful than I was, and is not only a great daughter but a good student and a great helper to our family. She already has a pretty sound path planned for herself and is eyeing W.S.U., her mom's alma mater. Jack is 10, what can I say, this one is a little more like I was, stubborn and moody, but also smart as a whip (ouch) he is a very good athlete and shares with me the love of baseball. He is an excellent player but questions me often if I really ever played. (I did play 3 years in college and played a lot of semi-pro ball) I have been pulled back into the game by his abilities and spend much of my free time teaching him and encouraging him to get as much out of being an athlete as posible. In April of 2007 Jack was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This was a big blow to a seemingly strong and fit young boy to suddenly be 100% dependent on insulin shots for survival. Despite the disease, his approach is as good as I could ever hope for. He allows it no quarter to slow him down and in some ways our family has benefitted greatly by the extra emphasis of healthy living. He is a smart kid who like his dad has no interest in learning formally in the classroom. I am using my own failed experience to coax him into applying himself so as to give him a chance in this ever increasing competetive world. Will, is 8- an extremely nice and caring boy who excells in school and in sports. He has the blondest hair and fair skinned (my boy?) you could imagine. He obviously looks like his mom. He is a morning t.v. watcher (sponge bob..I love that show.) and an avid reader, all my kids read like crazy. Plays soccer and baseball and makes gigantic messes around the house. I have been married nearly 18 years to my wife Debbie. She hooked me long ago with her beauty and with her heart. She has been a great motivator for me and has produced a family of closenes...Expand for more
s and togetherness. She graduated in '83 from Stadium High in Tacoma and we met at work, I really had to put the moves on her to get her to give me a chance as she was spoken for (just a boyfriend)when I first met her. After about a year of bugging her she finally gave me a chance when her other relationship was fizzling. The rest is history and I have never looked back. We together have had a very rich life, and have made our closeness work itself out in the things we have pursued. We live in Maple Valley WA. in a house that we designed and General Contracted ourselves, we have a beautiful 5 acre parcel that we took from forest and scrub to a sprawling estate type setiing. It takes me an entire day to mow my 3 acres of grass. The kids have a full size Little League baseball field and our neighbors cannot be seen or heard. We have a 10 acre private lake that we share with a handful of neighbors and it truly is an incredible place for the kids to grow up. I have been in construction since my baseball days ended and have been building high end high rise office spaces for the last many years as a superintendent for TCI General Contractors. Debbie has been home with the kids for 15 years and also does accounting from our home for her fathers business. I continue to watch the world from cynical eyes but have tried to produce at least a haven of sorts for my own family, we are sort of reclusive in our pursuits but are trying to make sure our kids grow up with a great and vast view of life. Looking back on my years in Bellevue,Tillicum J.H, Sammamish, I struggle to find much that makes me feel proud of who I was, but the many memories are still vivid to me, both good and bad and I feel that I am much better as an adult because of those experiences. It would kill me if my kids did many of the things I did at their age. It was a strange time in the countries history I believe, I call it "kid world" when our parents did not seem to have any idea what we were up to. I wag my head in disbelief at the hours I kept, girlfriends and parties. Man, what were they thinking by letting us run wild as we did? I do however chuckle at much and still have a place in my heart for many people from those old days. In a private adult setting I wouldnt' mind rehashing and belly laughing about some of the crazy things that we did back then, I hope to hear from some of you good old souls that have some good memories of those days. Hope all of you are well and living the lives you wanted, this life is harder by the year to master, but I have truly enjoyed it all. Tom
