Tom's Story
Life
I am now the creative director for a new department at an internet company in Arizona. They needed somebody who could provide catchy headlines and copy, which is something computer people don't do very well.
For the previous nine years I wrote and produced advertising for a high-tech B2B ad agency in Phoenix. I used to write infomercials for stuff you didn't need but probably bought anyway.
In my spare time I write funny songs that get me gigs in coffeehouses and bars around the Valley. (I have also performed in venues as far away as New Orleans, San Francisco, San Diego, Richmond, VA and Portland, OR.)
In 2001 I released my first CD: "Something To Sell At My Gigs." It received amazing response, including airplay on The "Dr. Demento" show, where one song, "First House," was the fifth-most-requested song for 2001, and was #1 on "The Funny Five" the week of 6/3/01. As of 2006, songs from this CD were still popping up on folk-radio and comedy-radio playlists around the country, including a nationally distributed NPR show, "The Midnight Special." Check out my website link for more information on that. In April 2006 I released CD#2! It's called "But Wait...There's More!" and it's available though me or online at vendors like CDBaby. If you want more info about my music, or you want to know where I'm playing next, go to myspace, add a slash and type tomtuerffmusic
I am also the host of "Zappa Universe," which airs every Sunday at 6 p.m. Phoenix time on a website called RadioFreePhoenix dot com.
I'm married to a belly dancing dynamo named Janice and we have two boys. House, cars, dog, iguana, typical stuff. (Okay, the iguana isn't all that typical. he's 5.5 feet long and really old for an iguana.)

t happened to people I used to know.
I would especially like to hear from people I worked on plays with in High School and College, as well as people from my junior high and Brookfield Central High days in Brookfield, WI.
School
First kiss: Ninth Grade, at a cast party for spring musical. She was inebriated; I was picking her up every time she fell over. Finally I said 'There must be something we can do to keep you from falling over like this" and she said "I have an idea" and kissed me but good. when Monday rolled around, she didn't remember any of it.
First steady girlfriend: Senior year. She was a sophomore; her father hated all men who might defile his daughter. Come to think of it, he didn't much like the girls, either.
First Play, also ninth grade, "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown." I played Charlie Brown. If you were in the show and I haven't heard from you yet, drop me a line!
First Music Group: Rocky Mountain Oysters, senior year. Me and Matt Turney.
Favorite Teacher: Thelma Alderman, English, Paradise Valley High School, Phoenix. AZ
Least Favorite Teacher: Melinda Tempe, English, Wisconsin Hills Jr. High School, Brookfield, WI
First Crush: I won't name her but she knows who she is. I was so smitten by her eyes that I had to drop out of the only class we had together because I couldn't concentrate -- true story!
We dated a little, became great friends then lost track of each other for nearly 20 years. We live fairly close to each other now and I bump into her occasionally and I still babble like an idiot around her.
Strangest achievement: I received a Letter in football in my sophomore year. And I wasn't very good. I stopped playing after that. Moving to Arizona and pondering the idea of practicing in 110-degree weather will do that to a person.
