Tom's Story
After graduating from Lincoln High School, Northwestern University (engineering), and the University of Wisconsin, Madison (medical school with Jan Hobbs and Tom Perry), I ended up as an anesthesiologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago where I have been since 1979. I had risen through the academic ranks and have been a full professor in the medical school since 2002. I had most recently been named one of the Associate Chief Medical Officers of Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Northwestern is a 1000-bed hospital located just off the Magnificent Mile on the Chicago Gold Coast. 10th best hospital in the country in 2021. In August of 2021 I retired after 39 years at the same institution. I live in the near Northwest Suburb of Skokie with my wife Valerie (met at the UW and married in 1979). I have two grown sons, both married, both mechanical engineers out of the University of Illinois. My oldest son and daughter-in-law gave us our first grandchild, Violet. In my spare time I have returned to the track and coach the local high school's pole vaulters (remember the 1970 Wisconsin State Pole Vault Champion, Dave Dorak). Over my 20-year stint I have coached a 6th place boy and 11th place girl vaulter at the Illinois State meets. Our 50+1 Reunion was terrific. I missed seeing many of you.
