Tom's Story
For a farm-boy from Wausau, my life has been an adventure that I could never have imagined.
After I graduated high school, I went to college at Whitewater and graduated with a BBA-Marketing. My original plans were to come back to Wausau, but my life didn't quite work that way. I took a job in Chicago , then moved to New Jersey, New York City, Philadelphia, Detroit and then to Australia for 5 years. My work has taken me to over 30 countries, including Russia and China, which were countries that I always thought would be interesting to visit someday... and they were.
While they try to be "Western", they still are socialist countries and their people don't have a lifestyle like we do. In China, a refrigerator would be a luxury to have. In India, millions of people live under a "blue tarp", that we would buy at Home Depot for $10. Sadly, that's their home. We are so blessed in this country. I wish people would realize that and be grateful instead of complaining..
There is so much beauty in the world, both natural beauty and beautiful people. As a marketing person, I truly enjoyed learning about people and cultures. I loved Australia and would go back there anytime. The people are wonderful and the scenery is spectacular!
I also have been blessed with three wonderful children. They live in Texas, Hawaii and Michigan. So I still get to travel to see them as I now travel around the US in my motorhome (other than my daughter in Hawaii, unless I can figure out how to put a propeller on the motorhome).
Career-wise, I've loved marketing and am happy I chose that path. I worked for large corporations including Kmart and Coles Myer in Australia, where I was Chief Marketing Officer. I'm sort of a cowboy at heart, and have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, which led founding an advertising and marketing agency along the way. I can't say that I've ever been bored.
Spiritually, God has truly blessed me and I am humbled and grateful.. In 2017, after I returned from to the US from an assignment in Brazil, I ended up with severe back pains and found out that I had sepsis. I underwent emergency surgery, was on a ventilator and in a coma for eight days, then intensive care for another 3 weeks and in the rehab hospital for another 3 months. I was blessed to be alive as the survival rate for my condition is about 30%. I had to ...Expand for more
relearn how to talk, walk and pretty much start over. Thanks, to God, I am fully covered and back to myself...except moving in a new direction.
During my coma state, I thought I was dead. I saw my funeral and found myself walking in the most beautiful field of endless flowers, until I saw the most beautiful white building on top of a hill to my left. The most brilliant white light shown from the door of the building and I found myself being drawn toward it. When I got in front of the doorway, brilliant light was shining around and through me. I quickly realized that inside the doorway I would be meeting my maker., so I was terrified to look.
At that moment, I found myself looking straight out and down the hill in front of me. I suddenly saw two roads. To my right, a solid silver road going off in the distance with all of the material things that I had acquired in my life. Houses, boats, cars and other toys. I'll call that the road of materialism.
To my left, I saw a solid gold road winding into the distance. On that road were people, my family, friends and a few others, I'll call that the road of spirituality. I also quickly realized that I had much more on the materialism road than on the spiritual road.
At that moment, I heard a load voice speak to me. The voice said, "Tom what have you done with the gifts that I gave you?" As I stood there contemplating how I could explain my life's decisions to God, I came out of the coma. It was at that moment that I changed the direction of my life.
So for my remaining days, I hope to serve God and other people. I truly believe that I am "more blessed than stressed." I try to live by these three words:
Grateful, Joyful, Peaceful.
I have found that if I really focus on being grateful for what I have, not what I don't have, I find that I become joyful. And with joy comes peace.
So that's my story and I'm sticking to it. It's been an interesting, exciting and joyous life. As I said early on, I always hoped to come back to Wausau. After seeing the world, Wausau is still home to me and always will be.
Thanks for letting me share my story. I wish each of my classmates God's joy and peace till we meet again. Hope to hear from you.
Note: I'm traveling around the country in my motorhome but have a mailing address in South Dakota that forwards my mail
Blessings,
Tom
