Tommie's Story
Life
I graduated in 1959 and married a Paschal Grad. 58 (forgiven for that ) ha. We were happily married on April 1, 1961. Yep, it took because 45 1/2 yrs. later still happily married!! We have really spent two lives, the first 20 yrs. we had our 2 children, Kathy 1966 and Karl 1969. Don worked for IBM Corp. interupted by Viet Nam and the Army Reserve for 6 yrs. Then after 6 mo. boot camp etc. back to IBM for the next 18 yrs. We lived in Ft.W, Austin, Tx, and Lincoln, NE. Then in 1980 God called us into full time ministry in service to Him at 1st. Bapt. Church, Denham Springs, LA. (right outside Baton Rouge). Don now pastors a mission church soon to be in a building (hopefully - Katrina put a stop to building last year about this time). We have land that is prime and doubled in value right away as a new interstate exit off I-12 is going in now. God is good! We have been blessed with 3 grandsons all live in this area and I have been a dental asst. for the same dentist for 21 yrs. Trying to work myself out of a job as I am down to 2 days a week. I like to keep up with old friends, Sherry Wright Ferguson and I have been friends since the 5th/6th grade and I have a class pic at Sagamore Hill Elem with Sallie Bantz Coltharp and lots of others. Life has been very good to our family, bumps but no real life threatening things. We love the Lord and our family and life in general. Hope to be hearing about our 50th. Reunion sometime.
School
School was always fun for me. I went to the first semester of the 1st. grade in Hobart, Oka. My Dad was an oilfield worker and was drilling a well there and Mother, Susie and I lived in an apartment in a lady's home and spent 8 or 9 months there. Dad had a sever heart attack (he was 42 when I was born) and we had to come back to our home in FtW. I finished 1-6th grades at Sagamore Hill Elementary and loved school, ran track (relays we called it) and Robert Davis called me a few years ago and remembered I was the fastest girl in Sagamore Hill! Part of that running was from Doug Glidewell and W.J. Patrick who tried to kiss me!! Ha. I still have "love notes" he sent me in class. Also Larry Reed was my "boyfriend" when school came to an end and I have pictures of him and me holding hands on the school ground (big no, no) also Patsy Parmer and W.J. Patrick doing the same. (we must have taken each others pictures) "What fun" memories, Johnny Prigmore having ring worms, purple medicine and a white sock type hat! W.J. and some other boy telling us (girls) to look up the word "rape" in the dictionary that was in the middle of the table we were sitting at in English class (Mrs. Toman's class) and I still remember the definition - "Carried away by force" Edward Gardel giving me a soft ball and a hampster (he must have "loved"me a lot and had money!!) He asked me to go on the bus to LaGrave Field one saturday for a Ft. Worth Cats ball game. I can't believe my Mother let me go!! When we got there, there was no game being played so we caught the bus back to my house at 900 Benton St. We used to go "square dancing" at some rec. building at night and had fun dancing and holding hands in the "dark back seat of the car" OOh, what great memories
Junior High was 1 year at the old school on Meadowbrook Dr.(Meadowbrook Elem.) My older brother and twin sisters born 1922 and 1924 went there!. Then 7th. and 8th. grade at the new building near there. I remember the fun we had there too, football teams, games, eating lemons to help you yell better??figure that out, buying big dill pickles to eat and going to the Gateway Theater on Lancaster Dr. on Saturdays. By then it cost 25 cents to get in. Sometime my Dad didn't have an extra quarter but mostly he did and I think I walked to the movie. I remember holding hands under the arm rest and when he was brave enough, Joe Lewis put his arm around me!! Then the manager who roamed the aisles spotlighted us and that was the end of that. I remember wearing his ID bracelet and a disk with his name on it!!. Writing more love notes and going "steady", then he dumped me for some other girl!! Broken heart but recovery. I remember the good looking social studies teacher, name eludes me, that was married to a Paschal High School senior! That made him more real and all the girls "loved" him.Slumber parties, dances in the gym, playing tennis and winning doubles championship with Sandy Kemp, going to Sagamore Hill Baptist church summer youth camp having such fun and making many friends.
Then came Poly High School, I still sometimes have "school dreams" and the delima is always I can't remember my locker number or my schedule and don't know what class I'm to go to next. Then I get to be a Senior and realize I have forgotten to go to English class and won't graduate because I don't have enough credits!!Actually school was so much fun I didn't have any trouble with grades, made my first B in Algebra, never could get that stuff. My favorite teachers were Mr. James, homeroom and world history, and Mr. Norton, american history. Donald M. I believe his name was. Didn't date much in highschool, I really had to like a guy a lot to date - Sorta suffered with that when proms etc. came along. But I met Don (husband of 45 yrs) when I was a junior. I even have a group picture at the Poly/Paschal basketball game that we met afterwards. The pic is in "58 yrbook, and we are almost on the same row, just opposite schools
College
I was able to attend one...Expand for more
semester at Texas Wesleyan College in East Ft.W. It was a lot of fun and I had hopes of being a biology teacher in high school. I got a small scolarship and was able to live at home so joined "Town Girls" that met once a month. I pledged to Tres Ami (I think that was it) a girls social club and had fun wearing the stupid Fros hat down on my eyes and answering to all the upper classmen with much politeness. Then going through the hell night and becoming a member and having Dereta Whiteman as my big sister. Meeting new friends, and coming to love people that I had never seen before. I met Carolyn Young Kitchens and found out my husband to be was her paper boy and she waited for him every chance she got to see him, he was a year older and attended the high school she went to Paschal. I have reconnected with her through this medium and hope to hear more from her. Old friends are very dear to me, and would welcome anyone who reads this bio to respond if we were in any school together.
Workplace
I did a lot of baby sitting in highschool, that seemed the best way for a girl to earn money then. My first job was when I was in College for a semester. I responded to an ad for a job with Joseph A. Richker. He was a CPA and had a little one room office in the Medical Arts Bldg. in downtown Ft.W. I can't remember how often I worked for him but my biggest challenge was keeping the old Goat at arms length as he liked young women and was at that time probably in his 60's. I did typing for him and he made the mistake of telling me if I ever disagreed with him to let him know!! Well after dodging him and moving away in my roller chair only to have him finally pin me to the wall so he could be outer thigh to me and giving me a Christmas Gift and asking if he could kiss me on the cheek, I took him up on the "we don't agree thing" and that was it, I didn't last much after that and was glad!! I later found out from a girl he had hired before me that she was sharpening her pencil and he came up from behind and touched her where he shouldn't and she just turned around and slapped him!! Well, that was her last day!!
When I had to get a job in the first of 1960 I applied to an ad for an IBM Keypunch Operator at Tarrant Savings Association. I had taken a course in Key Punch at Tech and got the job. We moved into a new building a few months after I started and it was a great experience, met some older women and my boss was a man and a real gentleman named Bill Holbrook. The lady who "mothered me" was named Leona Hale and I kept in touch with her for years but have in the last 10 yrs lost touch. She is probably with the Lord now but all in all that was the best experience I had with jobs. I next worked for Continental Oil Co. as a key punch operator and when they moved to Ponca City Okla, I went to work for Sinclair Oil, actually I was drawing my unemployment and had to show up for the possibility of working for them and was by now married and pregnant with my daughter and just knew they wouldn't hire me. Well they did as they were also moving their operations so needed me to work for just a while. I did not have to work again after my children were born for many years. When Don left IBM and went into the ministry in LA. I still did not work but when we mutually agreed to leave the church we had been at for 3 1/2 years, I was hired by the dentist who had become our friends in our church and a new church was formed and I have been working for him for 21 years now, always part-time, the only time I was nearly full time was a few years ago when we needed the money and I worked 4 days a week. I am currently trying to work myself out of a job and work 2 days and hope next year to go to 1 just for fun money. Preachers don't make that much so my money is for "fun". The Lord takes such good care of us that when and if we can retire, it will be good I'm sure. Our mission church hopes to build our bldg on the 10 acres we have here as soon as possible and then Don will pray the Lord will send a younger man to take over and lead Christ's Community Church to whatever future God has for them. We will downsize house, car and hope to travel and visit the friends we have all over the US and minister wherever we are needed.
It is now a couple of years later and I am updating this story. My husband did retire as of July 1, 2008 and we are at the present on an extended vacation to give the new pastor time to settle in without Don being there. We will stay in the church in some lesser capacity and travel when we can and minister however the Lord sees fit. I now work for my dentist 1 and 1/2 days a week for the "fun money", which mostly goes for gasoline as we are now completing a 3,000 mile trip and the most we have paid for gas was 4.25 a gallon somewhere in Arizona I think. We probably averaged about 3.89 or so and got 28 to 30 miles to the gallon on my '04 Honda CRV so can't complain and have had a wonderful trip to many places we've never been before. The cool mountains of NE Arizona for three and a half wks. was the best!! We are now in Aledo, TX where Sherry Wright Ferguson, my friend since the 6th. grade lives. It is July 26, 2008.!! The best to anyone who endures to the end and reads this letter. May the Lord bless you and keep you and cause His Face to shine upon you and give you peace as you accept Him as your savior and Lord. !! See you at the big "50th" reunion Oct. 09 if you graduated in 1959.
