Toni's Story

I suppose I should put something meaningful here. I am grateful to have finally gotten old. Getting older beats the alternative. I never thought I'd live past my 50s so when I hit 60, I was rapt. And I have found being old to be so freeing. I feel free from all the trappings and petty societal and self-imposed trappings of youth. I am free to create beauty, which is infinitely more fulfilling than physical beauty. Life is a marvellous and fascinating gift. I love this planet and appreciate life in all of its forms... the flora and fauna, the earth, water and skies. I cherish every day that I get on this planet. I am so content. I found the secrets of happiness... there are only three: gratitude for whatever you have; love is given... if you really want to feel loved you must give love; and a sense of humour above all. These three things will fill you with the glory of joy. They are three treasures that we can take with us when we die. Love is tricky. The more you give love, the more love you feel. And, like respect, it must start with self. We can only give what we have. My life has been ordinary. Yet there have been many adventures. I was married for 14 years, then divorced. After many years, I am remarried to a most loving man. I am the mother of five amazing people, all grown, some with not only kids of their own, but grandchildren of their own. So I am a great grandmother of 7 beautiful children. Though I have five children, only one (a daughter) was by birth. I have three adopted children (one boy and two girls) and one fost...Expand for more
er daughter. If I had it to do over, I'd have adopted more and started fostering earlier. A full, loud house is delightful. I love kids and family. That's the best thing. I did go to college, got a BA in Communication, and worked in television in Vegas. I won a few awards and was on my way in my career, but that was interrupted when I met an Aussie farm boy. I relocated to Australia and became a farmer's wife. What an adventure! I learned so many things. Everything from gardening to baking from scratch, wood working, quilting, folk art, how to drive a tractor... and so much more. I remember how excited I was the first time I saw a kangaroo hopping through our house paddock. Coming outside to find hundreds of galahs (rose breasted cockatoos... they are wild here) in our driveway after a rain. A black swan on our dam. A massive flock of Ibis grazing in one of our paddocks and walking slowly up the road. Raising an orphaned lamb who thought she was a dog because she thought our dog Floyd was her mother. I named her Chantilly and she was so funny! She would chase cars, chase sheep... she thought she was a dog. Having pet peacocks and emus... living on a farm is the best life. It is magnificent. The nearby town, population 1472, in the Australian bush... such a sweet, peaceful life. The people here are so friendly, they wave to you when they drive past you in their cars. Living the traditions of the Australian Country Gentlewoman is a privilege. The history, warmth, generosity and sincerity of these people are a blessing to me. Cheers!
