Toni's Story

Hi. I am married to a wonderful man and have two children - Kelly, age 30 and Daniel, age 28. Kelly is married and has 3 children - Thomas (12), Damyn (7), and Madison (5). Daniel and his live-in girlfriend have two children - Dylan (2) and Chloe (10 months). My husband, Charlie, moved to Wisconsin 2.5 years ago to buy a small farm. We now live in the small town of Bear Creek, WI on 20 acres. We raise alpacas, grow our own hay (and sell what we don't need), and just added to our menagerie with the purchase of 2 eleven week old livestock guardian Maremma puppies - Max and Sophie. Charlie and I both work at American Express - Charlie is a supervisor in the call center and I am a specialist in the licensing department. I enjoy spinning yarn using the fleece from our alpacas as well as knitting, making my own soap and bath/body products, and growing flowers/herbs. We also grow lots of vegetables and have started a small orchard. Our goal is to have a small retail store on our property where we will sell alpaca products, knit goods, yarn, bath/body stuff, and dried herbs/flowers from the garden. Charlie enjoys doing some woodworking and working on radio control model airplanes. He and our nephew are working on a model train layout in the basement. Another goal we have is to bring local school children ...Expand for more
out to visit the farm and possibly even do some group therapy type work with the special needs population. I would love to have some 4H students come in and learn more about the alpacas and eventually learn to help out at the shows. We have 2 males that are looking really good and should do well on the show circuit next spring. Three of our females have been bred and will deliver their babies next spring. We are looking forward to watching the babies run and play in the evenings. Charlie and I both enjoy doing work on the tractor - a 57 Farmall 350. Lately, we've been busy building shelters and putting up fencing for more pastures in addition to working our full time jobs. I'm doing some research to see how we can diversify our operation by adding either Shetland sheep and/or Scottish Highland cattle. Originally, I was thinking Angora goats, but have since changed my mind as they are a little too smelly for me. For fun, we enjoy kayaking and camping, but don't have much opportunity to get out these days. We always seem to have people coming to visit or just stopping by to see the animals and we enjoy telling people all about our funny looking livestock. Someday, we hope that one of the kids or grandchildren will want to run the farm, but in the meantime, it keeps us busy and we're enjoying life.
