Tony (Bud)'s Story
My story is fairly straightforward. After graduating from GLRHS, I attended Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT with Harry Shallcross and Jan Mytelka. After getting my BA degree in 1967, I was fortunate to land a teaching job at the Punahou School, Honolulu, HI. From there I went to San Francisco, CA, and began my sales career with Xerox. There I met the former Terry McCarthy, and we ultimately married in 1979. A year later (actually 9 months and 3 days later), Peter was born, and he was followed by Anne and Thomas. At the same time, I moved from Xerox into the application software business where I stayed until the demands of my young family prompted me to apply my sales skills in an industry that allowed me, among other things, to be home every night: residential real estate. After twelve years representing Buyers and Sellers, I then worked with developers selling multi-family projects for the following ten years. When that all came to an end in 2008 in the wake of the financial crisis, I returned to residential resale with Prudential California Realty in my hometown of Orinda, CA.
Terry and I celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary in June. Our adult children all stayed in the Bay Area and see their aging parents very often. We all enjoy going between our family home to our place at North Lake Tahoe, both in the summer and the winter. I was delighted to have dinner a while back with Ted Davis when he was in San Francisco. Joyce Handler and I connect via e-mail once in a great while. Other than that, I really have had very little contact with my high school friends.
I always wanted to be a doctor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it happened, they are okay with how things turned out.....
Work is my primary hobby. When I'm not working, I enjoy making my yard look beautiful and getting together with the family and friends at both homes.
I find that I am slowly becoming my father, Tony. He always tried to be kind, generous, calm, and very funny. He was also very proud of my accomplishments, even though I didn't really deserve the title of "Most Likely To Succeed." I will never forget that he made a special effort to attend my induction into the National Honor Society my senior year when I was too ill to go. It was the first and last time that he stepped foot into my high school. For whatever reason, it was not a comfortable place for him to be and yet he took it upon himself to represent his only son on that day.
I watch a lot of professional sports, and I really enjoy first-rate movies. In fact, when I was at Punahou, I helped create and subsequently taught a class to seniors called Novel to Film. I hear from former students that it was the best English class that they ever took. Today it wouldn't be such a "novel" type of course in high school.
My children keep me young and informed. They are so much more aware of the world around them than I ever was, and I am blessed that they seem to like including me in every aspect of what they do.
Campus life at Wesleyan was great. I was a member of Chi Psi with Jan Mytelka, and I was a dorm counselor in my senior year. Both w...Expand for more
ere very rich experiences. I still can't believe that Jan is no longer with us. He will always be in my heart. I would give anything to be able to make him laugh that wonderful laugh again.
I love what I do for a living. It has not only been rewarding to help people achieve their real estate goals, but also because the business has been very good to me financially. Practicing real estate in California for a long time was a slam-dunk. Now it's like trying to hit a three-point shot from mid-court....
I believe that I was voted Best Dressed by my classmates in 1963. For what it's worth, I still like dressing appropriate for my age but with the suggestion that I am very successful...even though this notion may not be entirely accurate.
My closest friend is Tony Caprio. He and I were roommates at Wesleyan my freshman and sophomore years. As Italian Americans, we were a rarity at this wasp East Coast school in those days. We remain very close friends today. He is the President of Western New England University in Springfield, MA, and one of the finest human beings that I have ever known.
My first job was teaching at the Punahou School , where I got paid $6000 to $9000. What I remember most about it are the amazingly talented students, including the current President of the United States. That's right: "Barry" was there when I was there--one of the very few Black children in the K-12 population. At the same time, I made many dear friends among the faculty members. My greatest friend, Win Healy, was very close to me, living in retirement in MA before he died from cancer. He was my boss when I was 22 years old and trying to decide whether to stay in education or not. He put it perfectly one day. He said that I had a "case of the wants," and teaching wasn't going to provide me with the income I apparently desired.
I remember my childhood friends very vividly. Both the guys and the girls were first-class. I can't remember anyone I didn't like in either K through 8th grade or in high school. I mean this claim sincerely.
In sum, I have had a great run and am very thankful at how things have turned out. And like many of us, I lost a lot of money during the financial crisis of 2008. it's okay, however. I still have children that most fathers only dream about. It's ironic that when Win told me that I had a case of the wants, neither one of us realized that what he was really talking about was the most important thing in our existence, the family. This is the glue that holds everything together--even when one loses a small fortune. I now want for nothing, really, and it has nothing to do with my net worth. It has everything to do with Peter, Anne, and Thomas and my daughter-in-law, Kira. I hope they know how strongly I feel about them....
That's my not-so-brief story. I hope that I have not sounded too boastful or obnoxious here. I have no idea who will read these words. It's been fun writing them, however. Thank you, Memory Lane, for providing the generous forum. I look forward to reading the stories of my many high school and college classmates on this site. As they say in Hawaii when one is either coming or going: Aloha....
