LT COL JAMES A. CREWS
Lt Col Crews is the Director of Staff and Manpower, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado.
Lt Col Crews was born on 6 Oct 1961 in Lake Providence, LA. He received his commission from AFROTC at Louisiana Polytechnic University in May 1989. He is also a 1994 graduate of Squadron Officer School, a 2001 graduate of the Air Command and Staff College, and a 2005 graduate of Air War College.
Lt Col Crews graduated from Neville High School, Monroe, Louisiana in 1980 and earned a four-year football scholarship to Northeast Louisiana University. After completing his athletic eligibility, he became a student coach before enlisting in the Air Force in 1986. Lt Col Crews was then transferred to Louisiana Polytechnic University in 1987 to pursue a commission through AFROTC and graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies the same year. While completing his AFROTC requirements, Lt Col Crews also completed his Master of Arts degree in Modern European/Soviet Studies in 1989.
After completing undergraduate missile training at Vandenberg AFB, California, Lt Col Crews assumed missile launch officer duties at the 90th Missile Wing, F.E. Warren AFB, Wyoming in May 1990. During this tour, he served as Deputy Missile Combat Crew Commander (DMCCC), Flight DMCCC, Missile Combat Crew Commander (MCCC), Flight Commander, and as an ICBM instructor and evaluator commander. Lt Col Crews also served as an ICBM Codes Controller and Codes Instructor in the 90th Missile WingÂs Missile Control Flight.
In 1995, Lt Col Crews was assigned to the 30th Space Wing, Vandenberg AFB, California where he served as Guardian Programs Staff Officer, Russian Strategic Rocket Forces Visit Lead, Guardian Programs Protocol Officer, and as the 1997 Guardian Challenge Project Lead. s by-name request by Air Force Space Command as the 1997 Competition Lead. Lt Col Crews led the office in hosting over 2600 competitors and guests, leading and coordinating with over 1000 base support personnel for one of the most lauded competitions executed. Lt Col Crews was then asked to serve as the 30th Operations Group Executive Officer following the 1997 competition.
In July 1998, Lt Col Crews was assigned to 21st Space Wing Plans and Programs Staff, Peterson AFB, Colorado as Chief, Optical and Radar Systems. While there, he oversaw all space surveillance program management and acquisitions for the 21st Space Wing. Upon completion of his tour, Lt Col Crews was selected as the 18th Space Surveillance Squadron Operations Officer in June 2001, where he led the unit as the "flagship of the 21st Space Wing." He was transferred to Headquarters, United States Air Force, the Pentagon in May 2003 to work as the Air Force Liaison for Joint Actions & Requirements with the DoD and Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In 2004, Lt Col Crews was by-named as the Integration Branch Chief for the Requirements Policy and Process Division. He supervised three expert contractors managing the Air ForceÂs Special Access Program requirements. He became deputy division chief on 20 Jun 2005 and acting division chief on 1 Sep 05.
In June, 2006, Lt Col Crews went to Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station in Colorado and became a certified Mission Director for NORAD. He moved to his current staff position in December, 2006.
Lt Col Crews is a Command Missile and Space Officer with training in the Minuteman III and the Optical C3 weapon systems. His military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with seven oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Combat Readiness Medal, & the National Defense Medal.
