School
Started in California were I was born. Went to all the grade schools in Cypress Ca Kindergarden to the 5th. Spent my 6th grade at Juilet Morris. Oxford Jr High 7th and 8th. Mark Vargas, Louis Lacayo, Kim Frazier and her cousin Geri. Moved to Oregon in 69 and went to school in NE Portland for a couple of months until we moved to Scappoose. I did not know a soul, so it was trying at times to make friends with other kids who knew each other all their life. I hope they can look back and realize what a new kid goes through to be accepted when they show up as the "NEW" kid. I tried the best I could. I attended my freshman and part of my sophmore year there. I help pick out our class rings. Mine got stolen around 1976. Wish I could get a new one. Went back to CA because my mom and stepfather split up. Went to Western for about 3 months. I knew a lot a of kids there because I grew up with them, so it was easy to melt in. We moved back to Oregon and live on 142nd and Stark and went to Centennial High. I met my best friend Dave Bitz there. I went to work at Fred Meyers on 122nd and Division. Got my first car, 1964 Falcon Sprint Square Back Boss 302 V-8, and got my first motorcycle '73 250 Yamaha Enduro. Making $1.65 an hour then. Didn't do to bad. Dated a lot and had a great time. Scappoose was on a run then in the sports side of things. I played for Coach Cleghorn Jr Varsity baseball team. He coached our Basketball team to the State AA Championships 2 yrs in a row with our big man Dave Allen. We also played Gladstone for the State AA Football Championship on our own field and loss. I believe it was the second play of the game and Curt Romberg ran for a 80 something yard touchdown. I played soccer on a team formed by Mr. Williamse. I hope I spelled that right, he had two sons Mark and Jan. Going to school in Scappoose was the best. I wish I could remember all the names of the guys I hung around with. Picking strawberrys by the flat for .75 cents, riding our motorcycles on the logging roads, Mr. Cupples in woodshop, Mrs. Castro spanish teacher, I remember Cindy her daughter. The parties, strawberry hill for a buck. Going fishing and hunting. At Centennial in my Jr. year we won the State AAA football Championship with Ray Williams as running back. I heard he went on to play for Frank Kush at Arizona State and they went undefeated. About half way through my Senior yr I signed up for the delay enlistment program to go into the Air Force and moved back to CA. I didn't like school anymore so I took my GED and worked until I left in June 74 for the service.
Military
I started my career at Lackland AFB. We started with 50 and finished with 49 guys, 35 of us went to Chanute AFB (basic firefighting school) in R...Expand for more
antoul IL. What a mix, California, Texas and New York. The Seide twins from Argentina, Ted Shultz and Grossburger, who we renamed Cheeseburger. TI's Stangel and McElroy. Then onto my first asssignment at England AFB LA. I was trouble. The youngest firefighter there. I had a blast there. Ronnie Britton, Lambrite, (to hardcore worse then me). This guy would walk around just a Staff Sergeant, and thought he was it. You would be done with your work, but he would always find some crap for you to do. It was the old days about to end. He made Tech Sgt and then retired. I must of learn something from him because I can remember him and his name, Curtis. Henry Gilmore, Bruce Jones, Sgt Malone, Sgt Long, SSgt. Barret, Sgt.Gangne (my first supervisor and from Canada). I just turned 19 and we had an inflight emergency on a A-7 fighter aircraft. It came in and crashed at the approach end of the runway. I couldn't believe my eyes, because we were sitting right there. The pilot lived. It is so hard to describe the incident, just unbelieveable to watch it just break up into many pieces. Just remembering the pilot looking out like "what the hell happen". I will never forget that moment. We were about 10ft from the aircraft on our setup on the rescue side. WOW!!! I then moved on to Elmendorf AFB Alaska. Richard Naylor, Wemberly, Kenny Glass, Sr and Jr Sims, Al Legg, Tony Ozuna, Brock, Jim Moran, Bob Acosta, Higginbotham . I met my late ex-wife, Susan, divorced and we remarried. What a great time and being in a beautiful site, GOD's country.Next was Sheppard AFB Texas, the worst assignment and worst civilians except for Gary Tumey and Freddy Williams. What a "HELL" hole. Was there for the Tornado Terrible Tuesday April 79. My oldest girl, Michelle was born there. Susan and I divorced. Went on to Castle, 6 months had orders for England. My next daughter Kacy was born there. Another native Californian like her Daddy. Spent 13 months there and moved on. Brandt and Cindy Myas. Firefighters and good people. Mildenhall RAF, United Kingdom the best assignment. Pankowski, Woody Flannagan, O'Reily (OR), Don McMullen, Teddy, Gonzo (worked with his Uncle at Sheppard), Ray Greer. Played fast-pitch softball for the base team. Got to travel all over Europe. The pubs, London, New Years, what a BLAST. Karla born there in 83 (dual citizen, US and UK). Eglin AFB FL there for 10 yrs. with little side trips to Shemya and Shield/Storm. Worked all 7 fire stations. Had a great time, but the heat and humdity took a toll. Learn a lot about being a firefighter and being in charge of others. One of my mentors, Frank Miller now a retired Asst Chief, was one who always had faith in me. I will never forget, great person. Anthony Jr. and Jessica born there. Worked with 24 of the best in Saudi Arabia. Just to name a few. AJ, Eric, Terry Piearce (Intel), Jonas Kemp, Eric Pietrilo (PieMan), Jerry Norgren, Brian Weightman, Brown, Carly, Jim Madruga, McDonald, Verdusco, Felix Delorenzo. 7 1/2 months there, camel spiders, sand, heat, sandbag after sandbag. Keystone firefighters (Saudi's), British and Filippino firefighters. What a trip. Seeing the hummer for the first time. F-117 stealth what a bird. All the Navy aircraft, meeting General Horner. Walking around the capital of Rihad and not worrying about someone attacking us. I will always remember the Moon, so big and ORANGE. No lights out in the desert and seeing all the stars. Everyone taking care of each other and watching each others back. The Red Sea, Arabs riding camels out in nowheres. Retired in 94. Went over to Turkey as a civilian contractor, Deputy Chief of Ops, joint Turkish and US Air Force base. Omar Uludag, a true friend. Senior Asst. Chief. Sadat Yalmaz my fire inspector. They were playing cowboys and indians there and I had to leave. Positions: Hydrantman to Chief 21 yrs.
