Tony's Story

Life I met my wife in my cousin's front yard in Cordele, GA. They were best friends. I was just back from Viet Nam and I hugged my cousin's neck and when my future wife made a smart-alecky comment, I hugged her neck, too. Later my cousin got me a date with her for that evening. I was in the infantry in the Army when we got married. I got out and went into police work, working first for the Miami Police Department, then the Douglas (GA) Police Department, and then the Macon (GA) Police Dept. Then I went back in the Army again into the infantry. Later I got into Army CID (Criminal Investigations), where I stayed until I retired in 1984. After I retired from the Army I went to Mt. Vernon Bible College and then pastored in Concord, N.C. Later we moved back to my home town, Douglas, GA, where I worked as a child abuse investigator and later became the campus chief of police at South Georgia College. For two years Vickie and I lived in Swainsboro, GA, where I started the Criminal JUstice program and taught Criminal Justice at Swainsboro Technical College before retiring from the state of Georgia. We have three children, all of whom are grown and have left home. Our boys, John and Micah are still single. Aimee, the youngest, married in 2001 and in October 2004 gave birth to Jack Hayden Piland. irth to Maggie Piland. We are very pleased grandparents! After my second retirement I went to Iraq as a civilian contractor and we now live in Cordele, GA. Our son, Micah, was married in 2009 and we went to Jamaica for the wedding. I was the interim pastor of Morningside Baptist Church in Cordele, GA for over a year, but have now retired again. Military I went into the Army as an infantryman in 1962 after I finished high school. My first tour overseas I was first with the 8th Infantry Division, but then transferred over to the the Third Armored Division as an infantryman in the 2/48th Infantry. In late 1964 I made Sergeant and in 1965 was sent to Ft. Benning, Georgia to the 1/9th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division. I was later transferred to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, re-enlisted, and shipped with the division to Viet Nam in 1965. I returned home in August 1966 and was stationed at Ft. Gordon, GA, where I made Staff Sergeant. Later I returned to Viet Nam as an infantry platoon sergeant with Troop C, 2/17th Cavalry, 101st Airborne Division. After returning, I transferred to the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command and spent the rest of my time as a Criminal Investigator. I had tours of duty at Ft. Meade, Maryland, Ft. Sill, OK, Panama, Ft. Campbell, KY, and even in Egypt.
