Tony's Story

Life Retired from 29 year Foreign Service Career - China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Brazil, Portugal. hui putong hua, falo portugues. Married 42 yrs. four children. ten grandchildren. Head a small china trade and investment company in Arizona. I graduated from Phoenix West High (64) and was a loyal Thunderbird with lots of new friends and teacher mentors. I attended West's 30th and 40th reunions, but also, for the first time, I attended an East Bakersfield High Class of 64 Reunion - so I could meet up with friends I had known before moving to Phoenix. I attended EBHS from 60-63 and their 40th was a joint reunion with rival Bakersfield High, but it cast a wider net of friends we had known since elementary school. Hardly a soul remembered me, but met a few who did and had a great time. Subsequently, I helped organize a small 45th reunion at Wool Growers in Bakersfield, a more quiet and intimate setting where we could have real conversation and catch up. I grew up in Bakersfield - lived on 5th street, U Street, and finally Pomona St. in College Heights. Those homes seemed so much larger in the 50's - Mark Twain made a similar observation of his home in Hannibal, guessing that if he came back in another ten years his home would be no bigger than a dog house. But, biking over to Carnation for ice cream, my dad driving me by the ruined clock tower on Truxton after the 1952 earthquake, meeting the last living full blooded Yokut indian (so we were told), officer chitwood, climbing the bluffs, endless summer hours swimming up at the college or sitting in the stacks at th...Expand for more
e library on Baker St., or collecting stamps- a hobby my dad interested me in when he brought home a Soviet Stamp honoring the death of Josef Stalin in 1953, are the stuff of fine memories and many imaginations. Looking at all this solitary activity, I think I can see why few remembered me at the reunion! 5 July 1963, we moved to Phoenix, Arizona where I finished my Senior Year. It was hard to leave so much behind, but Arizona seemed a frontier in those days. Horses in town, laws still permitting the wearing of a gun and holster, western wear, rodeo parades, rodeo days at school and thousands of people drawn to Arizona's warm winter weather, palm trees and broad avenues. In those Beach Boy days, many Arizona kids thought a Californian like myself ought to be pretty cool, but, truth is, I had never been on a surf board in my life and my Pendleton shirt, dark blue levis, and jodhpur boot Bakersfield look never made much of a statement - except, perhaps, "not cool." Nonetheless, I was happy to see at my 30th West High reunion, a gal who came up to me and said, "I remember you, you were that guy from California. I thought you were so neat." Now, she tells me! I am looking forward to future West and EB/BHS Reunions. The joint reunion was a great idea since we all knew each other at McKinley, Longfellow, Wayside, River Blvd, etc. before High School and school borders separated us, creating steep rivalries among us. Go Blades. My sister was a Driller and there was nothing I could do about it. Best Wishes to all on both sides of the divide. - tony whitehorn

How many ships have left this fjord in Oslo with shields and spears ready to conquer or baggage packed and loved ones in tow ready to settle on our shores?
A beautiful day at 70 degrees. Looks like a lake, acts like a bay!

Sweden must mean "sweetin" - those lead lined looking cakes are yummy princess cakes and those bun looking things below are a local specialty called "Limhamn Bombs" - tasty cream filled pastries. Mmm - good!
Bananers anyone? For the curious that is about $3 a kilo or about $1.35 a pound. My Arizona grocer gets $.57 a pound for the same.
Or try a pickle at $18 a kilo - maybe $8 a pound!
One reason church attendance in Oslo is down - coffee and donuts are served outside!

The rockin' party boat heading out as we return - we felt sorry for ourselves, "we wanted what they're having". Not really - our quiet slicing through the water and occasional mood music fit my age group.
A little house in Skansen, Stockholm is an answer to overcrowding...in fact, it was an answer to under eating. During the war, food shortages prompted the government to settle families into "allotment houses" - each with a
