Tracey's Story

The summer before beginning high school, my parents moved us from the North Eugene district to Sheldon. I started at Sheldon knowing not a single soul and looking very much the outsider. As a result, high school wasn't a particularly comfortable fit. Seeking a quick escape, I spent the summer after my junior year in summer school so I could work instead of attending classes my senior year. After graduation I went to Business College and from there I took a job in Phoenix, Arizona with a real estate development company selling land to homebuilders. That was 1985 and I've been here since. Although it was quite good while it lasted, land development sales eventually crapped out at exactly the time I wanted to have kids (1989). So I took a few years off, had two boys, and it all worked out great. Over the years I'd done different things, but in the mid '90s, I discovered I had a passion for two things: English grammar and kids. I went to ASU to obtain degrees in English and History so I could teach. That path led to my current oc...Expand for more
cupation, which is designing, producing and selling a women's tee shirt line, inspired by the ASU girls I was tutoring- great girls -vulgar tees! I'm no saint, not even a little prudish, but the smutty messages emblazoned across their chests inspired me to try something new. I started a line of shirts with positive messages and compelling artwork as an alternative to the Juicy obsession (one of my students came to class wearing "1-800 I'm Juicy" on her shirt). My clothing line is called Mizaru, in homage to the "See no Evil" monkey, whose Japanese name is Mizaru. My boys are both in college, which leaves me lots of time for tee shirts, an amazing husband, traveling, reading and English tutoring (still a great love). I've been to both our (Sheldon's) 10-year and 20-year reunions. Thirty is around the corner, and I'm not so sure I'll attend as it will only affirm that yes, we really are THAT old. Personally, I'd rather live in denial¿not that I'd ever want to be seventeen again, but somewhere in the middle would suit me just fine.
