Tracy's Story
Life
Oy, where to start? After high school, I took a year off and worked. The real world was not all it was cracked up to be, so I immediately retreated to college.
I spent my first 2 years at Flagler College, in St. Augustine, FL. I studied Spanish & Latin American studies. I spent a semester studying in Costa Rica, but then decided I wanted to come home. So I transferred up north, 1 semester at Bucks until I could get in at Temple. I graduated in May '82 with a degree in History.
I worked for 3 years at the American Friends Service Committee in their Latin America Program. I visited community service projects in Mexico and refugee camps in Honduras. I left there and moved to N. Carolina to work for Witness for Peace, a faith-based, non-violent movement working to change US foreign policy toward Nicaragua. They were, however, pretty unorganized and I left after 3 months.
I came home again and got a job at General Motors (yeah, I know, peace movement to big business in a span of 2 months) and I worked there for almost 4 years before downsizing resulted in a layoff. I was living very happily in Lambertville in a half of an old farmhouse.
I eventually ended up at Mobil Oil in the Princeton area, where I worked for 5 years before they closed (seeing a pattern?) and then went to work at the YWCA Princeton. There 2 years, but then took a big increa...Expand for more
se in pay to work at the IEEE. I was involved at that time with a nice guy, Ian, who lived in Princeton. We got pretty close, but after a year and a half realized it really wasn't a good match and went our separate ways.
I met Ian through the community theater company that I work with - Shakespeare '70. I am an actress, and I occasionally produce, have directed, maintain their web site, etc. It's a lot of fun. We perform every June at the Open Air Theater in Washington Crossing Park (NJ).
I had moved to an apartment closer to Princeton by then. After 4 years there, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a condo. I now live in Flemington, NJ, home of the outlets. I like it a lot. I had dogs for about 14 years, but both of them died in 2004. So I just adopted 2 kittens, Pebbles & Bam-Bam.
I left the IEEE after 6 years to go work with a friend at the Nat'l Kitchen & Bath Assn, only to discover they were undergoing a major reorganization. My friend ended up getting laid off a month after I got hired, and 14 months later, I got laid off.
So, I'm having something of a mid-life epiphany . . . I want my next job to a really good fit, not just whatever somebody offers me at a decent salary. I'm probably going to temp for a while just to pay the mortgage, but I feel good about the changes, and the direction my life is headed.
Whew . . . is that all?
