Mark's Story
College
Attended several colleges while on active duty with the US Air Force. Just retired after 26 years active duty, am working as a Dept of Defense Civilian and am planning on attending college in the fall. Close to another degree.
Workplace
(See bottom for updates) I worked as a carpenter after graduation from SVHS, then, enlisted in the Air Force, liked it, and stayed with them for 26-years. I spent time in California at two bases near Victorville in the Mojave desert. I then was reassigned to Germany for four years. Upon my return, I was based near Alamogordo, NM, for 6 years. My final assignment brought me here, Mountain Home, Idaho, where I've been since 1997. After September 11th, I deployed to Diego Garcia with our B-1B bombers and helped launch the October 7, 2001, reprisal attacks into Afghanistan. This deployment was just one of many to the far reaches of the globe and it looked as though there would be many more....my family was tired of it and so was I. I retired effective December 2002.
I recently started working for the Idaho Department of Corrections. Current position is temporary, though my boss is trying to get me a raise to keep me!! I doubt they'll give me enough money to stay working in a prison; however, I would contemplate a position within the downtown (Boise) offices if the position interested me. Don't need much financially as my military pension is quite good. Will probably move up the ladder rather quickly due to my years of management training, education and experience. I'll update this after I move and know more. UPDATE: I did get a job in the Boise Corrections office. I wa...Expand for more
s the Executive Asst to the Director of the Idaho Dept of Correction. But, my wife suffered some medical setbacks recently and I'm moving to a position on Mountain Home Air Force Base--I need to be closer to her. Looking forward to working for the federal gov't again. UPDATE: (Jan 2008) In 2004, I accepted a permanent DOD Civilian position working in Accounting and Budgeting. I enjoy this and will probably stay with this second career until I retire. I spend much of my time fishing and hunting here in Idaho. UPDATE: (Jan 2016). I've now retired a second time, this time from Federal Civil Service where I enjoyed a long career in Budgeting and Accounting. We now OWN our home paying off the mortgage in Dec 2015. Purchased a 30' camper trailer. Already have a boat. Will travel a bit, but likely never back to CA. Almost all my friends have left there....my childhood best friend, Robert, will leave shortly relocating north to WA. It's just a day's drive from here and I imagine we'll spend some time out there visiting he and his older brother Ken whom also lives in WA. Feels a bit weird not going to work any longer, but very nice to not have to scrape ice and drive on snow covered roads in traffic any longer. We'll put in a swim spa in a year or so. That will help with exercise, though I'm a member of our local Anytime Fitness and I exercise routinely 4 times per week hoping to stave off age and enable me to spend long days fishing on my boat in 90 degree heat and hunting trips where I walk up to 10 miles a day carrying a rifle or shotgun in ankle deep snow. 60 years old is just around the corner for all of us!
