Troy's Story
Life
My life in a nutshell as of Aug 2005...
My life since high school? It's been a while. Well, after high school, I went on to San Jose State and completed a BS in mechanical engineering in December 1990. Little did I know at the time that engineering would not be my passion -- far from it! In 1991, I went to work for United Airlines as a aircraft engineer & project manager. Although I was never really enthralled with the company, I stayed there for 6 years. It was there that I met Susan, so something good did indeed come of it.
I stayed at UAL until 1997, when I made some career and life changes. In mid-1997, I went to work for SBC (Pacific Bell at the time) as an outside plant manager. Six months later, Susan and I got married. I also returned to school to start an MBA program at Santa Clara University, which would take me until 2000 to complete. While with SBC, in 1999, I transitioned from the 24/7 grind of an outside plant manager to the fairly cushy responsilities of an account manager. By mid-2000, my largest account, Covad Communications, had recruited me and so I left SBC to join them. With Covad, I started as their national DSL manager and somehow springboarded from that into a finance director's role. After three years of having to make hard decisions with other's jobs ...Expand for more
in the balance, I found my own position was being eliminated in early 2003.
Everything worked out well though, as I subsequently transitioned into the mortgage industry. That was a huge blessing, but it was a bit hard to see at the time. From a work perspective, it was the best thing that could have happened to me because the mortgage business is where my passion truly lies. I've since been able to build a strong business. I went on to get my broker's license and am the co-founder and broker for Cipher Lending, a San Jose based mortgage company.
On a more personal note, I'm married (Susan) with two kids (Amber is 6 and Brandon 4). I live now in San Mateo, so I'm still in the Bay Area (much to the dismay of my wife Susan, who's from NY and wouldn't mind returning to the East Coast).
I enjoy hanging out with my kids, family and friends. I've been involved in community theater since 1997, with a group called Belmont Community Players. We put on an annual melodrama production, which has given me the opportunity to get on stage and have some fun. Most of the plays take place in the late 1800's in a western setting. I've played heros, goofy sidekicks and villians alike. Kinda corny but it's all good. We have a lot of fun with it. I still have family and many friends in the area.
