Tully's Story

Life Sergeant Major Thomas Tully Bryant joined the Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program on 18 October, 1977. On June 7th, 1978 he attended Recruit Training at MCRD, San Diego with the Bayou State Platoon. All 68 recruits were from Louisiana. After graduating recruit training, PFC Bryant attended Aviation Fundamental Class, and the Basic Helicopter Course at MATSG 90 on NAS Millington, Tennessee. Upon completion of that training, he reported to HMLA 767, 4th MAW , Belle Chasse Louisiana for duty as an SMCR UH/AH-1 mechanic during November, 1978. In June, 1979, LCPL Bryant augmented back to Marine Corps active duty and reported to HMM-261, aboard MCAS New River, North Carolina. There he joined his brother, Sergeant William Bryant. Both Marines shared the same duties as CH-46 helicopter mechanics and crewchiefs (air crewmen). Cpl Bryant remained with “The Bulls” until October, 1981 when he was promoted to Sgt and assigned to HMT- 204 to assist training new pilots. In August, 1983 Sgt Bryant transferred to the Search and Rescue (SAR) Detachment at MCAS, Beaufort, South Carolina. While there he served as a SAR crewchief and also a rescue swimmer. In January, 1988, SSgt Bryant reported to MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina for Drill Instructor duty. During that tour, he worked six platoons and his final role was as a Marine Corps Combat Water Survival Instructor-Instructor. After Parris Island, SSgt Bryant returned to MCAS Beaufort for SAR Duty in March, 1990. In August he was offered the billet as Line Division Chief for the MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor airplane being tested by the Presidential Helicopter Squadron. In January, 1991 he reported to MCAF Quantico, Virginia for duty. While at HMX-1, SSgt Bryant qualified as an Operational Test Director for Marine Corps Aircrew systems. In that role he performed developmental testing on items such as Night Vision Goggles, crew-served weapons, aircrew clothing and the helicopter aircrew helmet. In May, 1995 GySgt Bryant transferred back to the fleet and joined “The Black Knights” of HMM-264 at New River. While deployed in Bosnia 18 months later he...Expand for more
was selected for promotion to First Sergeant. Upon the squadron's return to the United States, he attended the plank-owner's First Sergeant’s Course in June, 1996 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. In July, 1996 First Sergeant Bryant reported to Alpha Battery, First Battalion, Tenth Marines at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The Battery soon attached to BLT 1/2 and began work-ups for deployment to the Mediterranean. Upon return to the United States from that deployment, he transferred to Inspector Instructor Staff at Washington, D.C. (Anacostia) which supported six Marine Corps Reserve units consisting of approximately 670+ Marines. In November 2000 he was promoted to SgtMajor and received orders to HMM-265 at MCAS Futenma, on the Japanese Island of Okinawa. While with “The Dragons”, he served as the MEU/ACE SgtMajor for peacekeeping deployments throughout the Western Pacific and Asian areas. Since June of 2003 he has served as the Sergeant Major of Headquarters Battalion in support of the Headquarters personnel of Marine Forces Reserve, New Orleans and also the Headquarter Staffs of its three major subordinate commands; 4th Marine Division, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing and 4th Marine Logistics Group. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with a gold star in lieu of second award; the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, also with a gold star; the Presidential Service Badge; and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. He is married to the former Miss Connie Ann Orgeron of Marrero, Louisiana. They have sons; Daniel Stuart (26), Phillip Vincent (18) & Ethan (4). Military I joined the Marine Corps prior to graduating from WJ. I left in June-78 for boot camp, returned after schooling for a short while, then departed for Camp Lejeune, NC in June-79. For the next 27 years I served literally around the world. In 2003 I returned to New Orleans for duty as the Sergeant Major for HQ Battalion for Marine Corps Reserves. I'm now retired from the Corps and working for American Eurocopter near Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. Connie (Orgeron) and I have been married for 22 years, this November. We have three sons, Stuart, Phillip and Ethan. I can only hope that your life has been as adventurous and happy as mine has. (Minus the BS in the middle.)
