Valerie's Story

Life One of the things I'm proudest of is being a volunteer. I have volunteered throughout my life here in Kapuskasing and continue to do so. I began at our church and went on to Guides and then Scouts. I went on to become a trainer and member of a provincial committee. From there I have moved to the Tourism Task Force and, if you haven't seen us on TV, have a look at the Kapuskasing Lumberjack Heritage Festival des Bucherons! As our family enjoys travelling it was a natural progression. I'm having fun working at it and will continue for the time being. In May 2005 our eldest son Jeremy married a lovely girl from Kap and they now live in Kapuskasing and are parents to four children.. Our daughter Pamm graduated from Lakehead University and became a teacher in her home town. She is married and has two beautiful little girls. And our youngest son Phil moved back to town as well and is also married with two beautiful little girls.. After College After graduating from North I went on to Georgian College of Applied Arts & Technology in Barrie for two years. I graduated in the General Business, Accounting program in May of 1975. Workplace When I first began working for a living I worked as A/R at what is now Douglas up on Bayfield St. When I married Ron and moved up north I began work at the local credit union before starting work at the mill as a statistician. I took a few years off to be with our children and then started to upgrade my college profile. Once complete I be...Expand for more
gan working in a local computer store where I quickly learned all that there was to learn about the internal workings of a computer. I became the manager and enjoyed the work very much. As the owner was an absentee owner it was increasingly difficult to do the job so I applied for a position at the local English radio station. I became traffic a/r manager and enjoyed my work. Three years ago our company was purchased by The Haliburton Broadcasting Group and I was promoted to Operations Manager, that's a fancy name for office manager. I've been in this position ever since. Each day in the business is different and challenging. I love working here and my bosses are great to work for. If I have any problems they are more than willing to help out when necessary. Most problems are dealt with at the local level, so unless it's serious, I deal with them. I work with a great bunch of people around the province and it's great that we are a team, even if we are spread all over the place. We do get to meet as a large group at least once a year. It's hard to get us all together at one time in one place, but we do it. After 20 years at the radio station I called it quits to take on "part time" the career that has always seemed to be part of my life. I am an Anglican priest and was ordained five years ago. My home parish is in Kapuskasing but I also have another parish four hours from here in Geraldton. Ron and I get to see some beautiful scenery and wonderful people as we travel there.
