Valerie's Story

2013 Okay...life is going good! I had a full shoulder replacement in July 2012...now it is my inner metal and me! Working on a master's so that I can teach at the college level. I have a wonderful grandson who is too much of a tornado for this arm still...Kids are both choosing their paths. Life can be AWESOME if you want it to be! 2012 Pretty much my life is still chaotic. 4 surgeries and I am living with my folks again. One more surgery to go, hopefully this summer and I am starting a graduate program in engineering so that I can teach at the college level. Waiting for my first grandchild to born! Currently, my life exploded...2009 has not been a very fun, easy or enjoyable year. It primarily started with my coworker dropping a manhole cover on me...yes, you heard me correctly. That was in March. I had thumb reconstruction surgery in August. I still have problems with my shoulder and am in the midst of tests, doctor appointments and physical therapy. The best part of 2009 was locating the daugther that my aunt had given up for adoption 40 years ago. However, they were only able to meet each other for a few days before my aunt passed away from lung cancer. The worst part of 2009 was in November when my husband of 22+ years told me that we were going to be divorced. I moved in with my parents in Payson. My daughter finished high school early and moved to Mesa to live with my sister. My son should be home from his mission in April of 2010. Life - Prior to 2009 I currently live in Flagstaff, Arizona. I've been married almost 22 years, to Kevin Heaton(Yum...Expand for more
a and Snowflake). We have two children, Justin - 20 and Emily - 17. We have lived in Colorado for the past 12 years and returned to Arizona in 2007. I attended NAU after graduation. I changed majors several times and finally graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering (with an Art minor!) I recently worked as a forensic engineer. I have had the opportunity to travel to the gulf (New Orleans, Mississippi and Texas) to review structural damages after the hurricanes. I mostly worked as a project manager for a repair project on 43 existing buildings. I returned to Arizona, working as a civil engineer for a civil design firm in Sedona. My husband has recently completed his course work for his doctorate and is working on his dissertation. I am again working for a forensic engineering firm, based in Phoenix. It is a part time position, which allows me to travel to damage sites and work from home to write up my reports. I started a portrait photography business (Accent Photographics) about 8 years ago and a landscape photography business (Visions by Farr) about 3 years ago. Our son, Justin, was just called and recently arrived in the Washington Tacoma Mission for a two year mission for our church. It took an extreme brain injury to knock some sense into him, but he is doing well. Emily now has (what she thinks!) complete control of the jeep. Grades and activities will determine the control that she will actually have! She is adjusting, participating in dance classes and enjoys singing. I enjoy reading, drawing, woodworking and enjoyed the beauty of Colorado!
