Valerie's Story
Hi everyone! After graduation from West High School I married and had/raised four children (I adopted my step-daughter, Lorrie and had three boys, Matthew, Michael, and Christopher). We lived in Princeton, Iowa until I divorced in 1984 and moved back to Davenport and went to Scott Community College. After graduation from Scott, I went to St. Ambrose, and then graduated with a B.A. from Marycrest, where I also went on to work on a Master's degree. I got a wonderful job at the Rock Island Arsenal where I got to travel, lobby congress on Capital Hill, work with the media and legislators. I was VP of my union and really enjoyed my work! Unfortunately, my health severely deteriorated with rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and a spinal condition, as well as a bunch of other illnesses, syndromes and conditions too numerous (and boring) to mention. h a full-time, live-in caregiver for six years. Life was definitely NOT GOOD....BUT...after gaining a lot of weight and then being diagnosed with diabetes, somehow the little spark of "fight" that was left emerged and I began to control my glucose via healthy eating, epidural injections to get me up and moving, and little by little I started to get better! I lost 60 pounds, went from NEVER moving to lifting weights, learning t'ai c'hi, and walking 2 miles! I still have bad days/weeks, but they are not AS bad as before. I have my life back! I have my sense of humor back! I can now truly enjoy my granddaughter Mikaela Rose, who is the light of my life! I worked on the Joe Biden campaign, and have an active social life. I'm single, but am dating as much as I did in high school! Oh, and I cured the diabetes! How about that? I missed the last 2 reunions because I was too sick, but I wil be there for the next one! There are many of you that I think of from time to time. I think every five years is not often enough to see each other..especially as we get older. I hope to hear from you sometime.
