Van's Story
I remember the summer of 1963 very well, as it was my last in Redondo. After I left for Willamette University in Salem, OR, our house on the corner of Ave A and Sapphire was sold and my mother remarried. After two years, I transferred to UCLA and moved back. After graduation I was a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English as a second language in Kanchanaburi, Thailand from 1967-1969. Kanchanaburi is the actual site of the Bridge On The River Kwai made famous in the movie circa 1956. I returned home the long way, spending two months in Europe. off Wilshire Blvd near MacArthur Park. After passing my third Army physical, I entered graduate school at Ohio University in Athens, OH. Upon becoming too old to be drafted, I dropped out and moved to Chicago in 1972. I have lived here ever since. I taught ESL at various places, most notably City Colleges of Chicago and YMCA Community College. In 1978 I started working for the Social Security Admin. I retired in 2007. I love retirement. And bad back and knees aside, I am very happy and very much enjoying this stage of life. I hope anyone who cares to read this feels the same.
