Vernice's Story

Hi everyone, where to start. When I graduated from Centennial in 1966 I hung around for that summer. In October when everyone else went to college I knew it just wasn't in my heart to go to College at that time, so I joined the Women's Army Corp. I went to Alabama for basic training and then to Georgia for AIT then to Virginia my 1st duty station as a Communication's Center Specialist (didn't see much daylight), then transferred to Maryland - Working with Top Secret stuff (interesting but still in the dark). I became proficient with rifles and pistols I was one the first women on the Fort Lee Rifle team and I was on the team when we won the 1st Army Championship. I met my X-husband at Fort Richie Maryland, we got there married and moved back to Compton. I worked here and there you know Northrup, all different types of business in LA, then I worked 13 years at Hughes Aircraft and went to school, taking one class at a time. During all this working and going to College I had 2 children my son (40) is the oldest and my daughter (38)is the youngest. Although I don't think they like me calling them my babies sincd they both have children. Yes I'm a very proud grandmother of 2 young men and I spoil them something terrible... back to the story... After 15 years of being together - breaking up - back and forth - years of craziness we decided to try being together one more time. We moved to Vallejo to take care of his parents which, I did until they both passed. My X-husband seriously abused me, I had to be hospitalized for more than 6 months and when I recovered and could travel I left and divorced him for good. Moving back to the Los Angeles Area I moved to Oxnard and went to school full time and didn't stop until I had my masters degree. I moved to Houston Texas to be with my kids because that is where they settled after they went to college. I wanted ...Expand for more
to be close to my children and grandchildren so here I am. I'm a Social Worker working with Intellectually and developmentally disabled persons for a non-profit and I love my work. I blow off steam by walking in the woods and them having a nice glass of wine (or stronger) and reading a good book. Booring huh!!! The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Linda Clemons, because We were really good friends. I hope old friends remember me as the girl jock who loved a good dance and had a lot of fun; a team player and did all I could to support our teams. Any of you from the Vanguard Jr.High days might remember the wildest thing we did was to place the VP's Volkswagon in the Quard! I'm a Reality TV junkie - especially HGTV. I love those decorating shows. As a parent I have learned how to be ever so patient with everything in the world and to forgive and pray daily. I am a Social Worker going to school for my second Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling. I have started a certification program in Special Needs Water excercise. I like to stay busy and I love improving as I go. If I had one do over I'd go to College after High School then join the Service. My oldest dearest friend lives in Lompoc and we met in Graduate School. We have the same world view, we are out of the box thinkers and it is just strange how we think so much alike. She is my Masters project reader, she reviews all my research work and I'm her PhD program reader. Her research deals with Criminal Justice. My research is on Domestic Violence. We both thrive on Chaos Therory and come up with stuff that stumps our professors all the time. I think we have clicked for so long because our life paths are parellel. We talk weekly and she knows I miss California weather a lot. If there is more you would like to know, please feel free to contact me. Mickie Zomalt
