Vernon's Story
I have always used my middle name "Ray" since birth. Class of 1967, after graduating I left for the Air Force and spent 20 years eight months active duty. Tours in Vietnam (21 months), Florida, Okinawa (3 years), Texas, Delaware, Germany (7 years), Spain (3 years), and Illinois,
In the Air Force I was a Logistics Plans Specialist and Air Transportation Superintendent I have an Associates Degree in Logistic Management, Bachelor's Degree in Business Management with minors in Human Resources and Marketing, Master of Science in Business Management, and Masters Business Administration (MBA) with specialization in Human Resources Management.
After military service I worked for State of Missouri as a Disabled Veterans Representative, Local Veterans Employment Representative, and Claims Representative for Unemployment Claims. I worked for the State of Missouri for 5.5 years and then went to work for the U.S. Department of Labor, Veteran's Employment and Training Service (DOL/VETS) for 15 years. I started as a GS-9 and retired as a GS-12, level 8. I worked in Jefferson City for DOL/VETS as Assistant State Director, Grant Officer, USERRA Investigator, and Veteran's Programs Inspector. I worked in Jefferson City for seven years then I transferred to Phoenix, Arizona in 2004. I worked in Phoenix as Assistant State Director, Investigator, Grants, and Inspector for eights years retiring in 2012. I worked for government agencies for 41 years.
In retirement I am enjoying traveling, volunteering at church and non-profit organizations. I am a lay minister and do church services with communion at retirement homes, care and recovery homes, assisted living, and dementia homes. returning to China for a month to travel within the country and Hong King, and visiting Seoul, Korea on my return trip home.
I was married twice and divorced twice, no children and single since 1997. Living in Arizona and enjoying everyday of my life.
In 1968 in Vietnam I learned that I was born with a right pelvic kidney only. I was on the operating table in Long Bien when the Army doctor took an Xray and learned I had only one kidney. In 2005, I was told I had renal failure and had to go on dialysis after implanting a fistula. I went on dialysis three months later and did dialysis three times a week for four hours each day. A member of my church donated a kidney and was a perfect match. In May, 2007, I had a kidney transplant. I think I wouldn't be alive today if God had not intervened.
Since retiring I have been traveling to Many different countries such as Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Germany, Canary Islands, China, Korea, Ireland, and Spain. I have also been doing volunteer work for the church and homeless shelters. I am a lay minister trained to do church services with communion at retirement centers, care facilities, assisted living homes, and nursing homes. I also volunteer at church for the stewardship committee, outreach worship team leader, core team leader, church council, Vice President and President of congregation.
I was married twice and divorced twice, last time in 1997. I have no children. I adopted a small Yorkie from the breeder's mill last year. Her name is Alisa and she is nine years old. I do weekly Skype video calls to my friends in China, Mexico and my sister in St. Charles, Mo. I read a book a week, swim or walk daily and work hard at maintaining a healthy weight. I enjoy life to the fullest each day and treat each day as it might be my last.
